Moyer’s Genetic Edge is a 40-head boar stud and 120-sow showpig operation owned by Tom, Andrew and Ben Moyer and their families. We caught up with Ben to see just “How They Work.”

What is your goal at Moyer’s Genetic Edge when raising showpigs?
Our goal is to provide a quality product that goes out and is competitive at the highest levels for our customers

What makes Moyer Genetic Edge unique?
We are unique because we built this from ground 0, and we have been where many are that we deal with daily.  Also, I  think our commitment to excellence is a big advantage in this industry.

What’s the first thing you look at when viewing sales on Showpig.com? Why?
I look at firms and pedigrees of their offering to see how our genetics are performing for their programs.

One word that best describes how you work:
Relentless

What is your most important gadget or electronic device? Why?
iPhone 7 plus: I’m on it all time keeping up with our business and customers through text, email, Facebook and Snapchat.

What websites, apps or tools can’t you live without? Why?
My phone, pretty much, and the showpig sites.

What do you listen to while you work?
I don’t listen to anything, so I can check for texts.

What is the secret to your success? (or at least one you would share)
There’s no secret.  I just enjoy doing what I do daily and work hard with a passion to make showpigs better.

How do you keep from getting burned out with the day-to-day? ‘
I never stop to think that I’m burned out, and I appreciate opportunities to judge hog shows.  I also enjoy sports, including The Ohio State football and coaching son’s baseball team.

What is your favorite and least-favorite chore?
My favorite chore is feeding boars, and my least favorite … well … cleaning pens, of course.

How long does it take you to picture, sort and write a description for ONLY one pig in an online sale?
Prep work includes washing pigs 7-10 days ahead of the sale. Then we spend 15 minutes per pig and we wash them prior to the photo, picture them and write the description.

Describe your ideal customer.
Our ideal customer is one that has a passion and one that listens, does as their told and follows up with us.

What do you find most satisfying after a long day in the barn?
Looking at some quality stock

Fill in the blank: I’d love to see ________ answer the.se same questions.
