If you’re in Kentucky’s capital this month for the North American International Livestock Exposition, the Showpig.com team has rounded up some places for you to go “Beyond the Barn.”

Our first stop is your new quick lunch choice right around the corner from the Expo Center. If you’re tired of the standard concession stand fare, head to Frank’s Meat and Produce. This small grocery store/butcher’s shop/deli piles freshly cut cold cuts on sandwiches that will make anyone’s mouth water. Don’t fret about a long line, the staff at Frank’s are friendly and efficient, and your lunch run won’t take much longer than grabbing fast food.

We know that after a long day in the show barn, you likely don’t want to travel too far for a nice dinner. We suggest heading to Beef O’ Brady’s restaurant and pub. They hustle up your typical American pub food less than 3 miles from the Expo Center. It is a great place to save tables for friends and split some appetizers.

If you are craving a slice of pizza, Impellizzeri’s is the best place in town to grab one. They pioneered “Louisville style pizza.” Every slice has two layers of toppings and two layers of cheese.

For great barbecue, head to Mark’s Feed Store. They have been serving secret family recipes handed down three generations from their Louisville location for nearly 30 years. If you love their sauces, you can even take some home with you. It’s a great stop, and you’ll feel right at home in the old feed store.

If you’re looking for things to do while you’re in town, the Interweb has ranked Louisville’s Mega Cavern the best stop on TripAdvisor.com. But, this isn’t your ordinary cave. Families can take tram tours, ride bikes and even zipline through the caves 100 underground acres that run underneath I-264.

If you’ve never been to the Louisville Slugger Museum, this is a must-see. Not only in the 120-foot bat propped against the building impressive, but the long history of the factory’s influence on America’s favorite pastime is fun for folks whether they’re sports fans or not. With COVID-19, you have to purchase your ticket ahead of time on the website.

An appreciation for purebred livestock runs deep in our industry, regardless of the species. That’s why we suggest touring Churchill Downs, the famous home of the Kentucky Derby. Even without the Run for the Roses in full swing, the Downs is impressive. It gives you a peak into the world of fast ponies, and tells you how blue-blooded horses have shaped Bluegrass country.
