Re: Replacement stock ?

Your operation, your rules. I've kept replacements from first parity females. In theory it is your best genetics. My selection criteria is to only keep females if the sow conceived first service, farrowed with minimal difficulties, has a proper underline, and wasn't from a boar heavy litter (i.e. 6 ...

Re: heavyweight-how early is too early

Not KGB, but my $.02

That's a tick early for fat supplements. I'd try to get more feed into them, feeding smaller meals more frequently helps. Other option is to switch to 809 has more energy than 709. Typically don't start ones on heavyweight until 140# or heavier.

Good luck!

Typically gain faster on 809 or 909 if you have access. Worm them with something different than the last time, make sure they have plenty of water. More water = more feed intake = gain.

Good luck!

Thanks.

Re: Buying in bulk

Best rule if thumb is 45 days. Depends what your definition of bulk is. My feed budget is 12 bags/pig from 50 pounds to show weight. So feeding 6 pigs I'd use 72 bags or less. Typically buy what lasts 2-4 weeks, keeps waste and spoilage from occurring. Added benefit is I'm never stuck with a bunch o...

Re: Weight gain.

Is there a minimum weight at the show?
For general reference, with normal healthy hogs, I use an average of 1.8 average daily gain. So figure an additional 65 pounds. Less shrink and travel loss, probably show weight is 190-200. Probably should be eating more feed to increase gains. Hope it helps.

Torf,
Do you use heat lamps or other supplemental heat for pigs? Trying to understand how the sows at one temp and piglets at another. The farrowing house conundrum.

Re: Camera system

Depends on distance from house to barn. Basic system from Wally or best buy work ok. Can set up for around $150

Keep heat checking. You got most of two doses into her. Gilts don't always follow the book. Will know for sure in 21 days.

Re: Breeding a gilt

What style of rod are you using? Could try a spiral tip instead of the plug type. Follow your protocol for second dose, some gilts don't follow the book.

1. Maybe. If you can get it out of him and check under a microscope it would help. Some young boars have issues with semen quality, volume, and concentration that can be helped with age. 2. Would start training him to the dummy well before you intend to use him. It helps. 3. Genotype is set at an an...
