Re: Retained pigs please help fast!!!!! (HogDoc)

If you are going to give Pen ( a more broad spectrum antibiotic would be better) you should be giving her 3 times more than what you are. Also Dex would help with the swelling. Did you give her some Oxytocin to help clean her out?

Re: Farrowing-C section?

Load her up with Meds and she should eventually pass them. She will get pretty sick but if you get on the meds and stay with them she should make it. I would use Pen and dexamethasone. Your vet should be able to help you.

Re: pig not growing

Sounds like he will be a problem for you so it might be time to get another pig to replace him. You probably are corect in thinking that he is the runt of the litter and most times they just do not perform as well.

Good Luck

Re: pig not growing

A couple of questions.

Are all 4 of your pigs penned together? Are you hand feeding or are they on a self feeder? What is his current daily gain?

If he is penned with 3 other pigs and is the smaller of the group you can count on him being pushed off of the feed thus he will never catch up.

sow sausage

Have a 2.5 year old sow that I didn't get bred. She is pretty lean. Question is is it worth trying to make sausage out of her? Any tricks to do so?

Boar Info

I have a 6 month old boar that I am considering using to breed a sow for our county fair show pigs. I just want to use him on this one sow. His genetic makeup should work great on this sow. Questions are: 1) Is his semen viable at this age? 2) He is not tall enough yet to reach her so I would have t...

Re: gilt won't come in heat

I sure would buy the PG600 and give her a shot vs missing breeding her for your fair. A 5 dose bottle of PG600 is $50. Worth the investment.

Re: Youth Project Sponsorship

Our local Ag Credit Union will give the kids interest free loans for their projects. It is a great program for the kids. The kids are allowed to sell 2 market hogs at our county fair so if they do a good job with their project, they do good enough money wise to pay back their loan. The sale averages...

Chapion Drive Last Week

Have a barrow that could be looser in his movement. He has been on 24oz of champion drive. Would it be best to pull him off of the champion drive for the last 7 days before fair? He looks good muscle wise etc, just a little tight.

I was able to work the testicle back up to the scrotum and successfully removed the retained testicle.

Thanks for the input.

retained testicle

I have a nice boar pig 2 months old. When I castrated could only get one testicle. Now the second is showing low beneath his legs. Vet wants $350 to take it out / deal breaker. Can I go get it or am I going to be having a BBQ if I try?
