Re: Food for the lovely pigs

Honestly, the main feed brands are all really good. We feed mainly Sunglo because it is the least expensive of the feeds around us. However, we do feed some Lindner and Showtec. It’s really about getting the right diet for the type of pig you have. Studying the protein and fat content in the feeds i...

Re: How soon can I tell if the ai worked?

I base our time clock on when she was locked up in heat. However, if you have one that swells a few days before she will stand in heat, you should watch for swelling. If you start to see swelling, then you need to order more semen.

Re: pg 600

Depends. In our uses of it, we've found the average standing heat to be around 4 to 5 days after the shot. Gilts tend to swell a day or two (or three) before they will actually stand. I've found that teasing with a boar gets you the best results when trying to pinpoint the start of standing heat.

Re: Is it okay if I start slopping my show pig, and if not when can I?

Personally, being a gilt and being that small, a good self-feeder and a high quality, very palatable feed will do a much better job than trying to slop her. I've always found that pigs slop really well for about 21 to 28 days. Then you have to start changing up the feed to keep them going. We have g...

Re: Over Run Semen Quality

We've had good luck with both booked and over-run semen. It's all shipped on the same day and at the same time. I've always assumed the over-run semen was just that, extra bottle of semen that were not already booked. I've found some boar's semen doesn't last as long as others, but not sure I've see...

Re: How soon can I tell if the ai worked?

The Captain Obvious answer is that you'll see pigs on the ground about 114 days later! But seriously, one thing you want to watch is to see if she swells and cycles 20 to 21 days after she was in heat. If she does, then you missed, if not then you might be ok. Unfortunately, if there is only a small...

Re: pg 600

Might have bred a little too early. I'm assuming she's a gilt and not a sow. Most like to breed gilts 12 hours after they are standing in heat, but normally, your best breeding time to hit that 30 hour ovulation is 24 hours after standing in heat. If I'm able to really check for heats consistently, ...

Those two areas are not where I would be using that boar or his sons to correct. But the best son I've seen is Make It Easy at Hi Point.

He tends to generate pretty consistent litters. Have to watch them on down pasterns some. But, we were very happy with success of the litter from this spring. Saw several other pigs from other litters this fall as well.

Re: Hamp boars cancelled pedigrees☹️?

First thing you should do is get your sows tested to make sure they pass. If they don't pass, it won't really matter what Hamp boar you breed them to. I would call the old tried and true Hamp breeders and ask them which boars they have that have passed the test and use those boars on your sows that ...

Re: Wrinkles

Personally, I think you are way to early in the feeding strategy to be worried about fixing wrinkles at the ham/loin junction. Unless she is really hard made and overly expressive in her muscle, I would stay with the 672. At only 110 lbs, if you really start monkeying around with the fat in her diet...

Re: Electrolytes & Joint supplements

I would concur with the previous post. We only use Electrolytes at the show. All you are trying to do is to hydrate the muscle which in turn will give you a more defined muscle pattern. Feeding/including them in their water significantly before going to a show, can actually cause more harm than good...

Re: General basic feeding information

If you are using a branded showpig feed, each company has a nice website that gets into how to feed their products. I would recommend checking out their sites. Lindner has some awesome videos where their pig feed specialist talk about how to feed different types of pigs. Showtec has some as well. Pu...
