Re: How to help Sow after C-section
The ability of a sow to bounce back after a c-section depends greatly upon what her condition was at the time she was cut. Sows that are early in the labor process and not stressed a lot will recover pretty well. If she has been in labor a long time and extremely stressed, they don't seem to bounce ...

Re: Sow with week old babies
You definitely need to be treating with an antibiotic - Excenel is a great choice, but talk to your vet about that. Your dose of penicillin is not doing a thing for the sow - kind of like peeing in the ocean. She may have a retained pig, although they typically start off not feeling well if that is ...

Not sure exactly where you are or if you have found someone yet, but Drs. John, Natalie and Jordan Baker do pig work at Warrick Vet Clinic. They are in Boonville.

Re: How late do you wait before going in to look?
Some great advice from mtkbmom - don't be afraid to sleeve a sow if you haven't seen anything for a while. As long as you are careful and use an antiseptic lube, the risk of infection is pretty small. A pig will not retain their placenta like a cow can - if you haven't seen a good amount of afterbir...

Every animal can be a bit different but they will generally be standing within 24 hours after first starting to show any signs of heat.

Re: help issues getting bred
Even though you didn't see strong signs of heat, I bet she was in heat after the Matrix/PG regime. Some animals don't read the book and stand rock solid. But if the timing is right and she was showing some signs, she was likely in heat. Hopefully she comes back around in 21 days.

Re: pG Usage
If she doesn't come into heat, I would give her PG-600. But wait and see if she comes in on her own first.

Re: farrowing tips
For those pigs that come out gasping a little but not breathing well, you often have to work with them a lot to get them going. And some don't make it no matter how hard you try. But be very aggressive with these pigs - rub them hard, blow into their mouth/nose, squeeze their chest, pat their chest,...

Re: MATRIX
However, do realize that if you start Matrix too late in the cycle (day 17+), those animals sometimes still come into heat when they were normally going to anyway. The Matrix sometimes does not over-ride the body's hormonal system if late in the cycle.

Re: white pastey discharge
If it is just a small amount and rather dry and chalky, I would not be worried at all. We see this commonly when animals are drinking very hard water - lots of calcium and hard minerals.

Re: 2nd parity sow only had 1
A sow needs to have at least 4 fetuses at around 28 days at the second point of maternal recognition of pregnancy. However, they can lose these fetuses at some point after that and the pregnancy will still be maintained. The pigs may be absorbed so that you never actually see anything come out at th...

I am guessing that the one describe with the split skin is epitheliogenesis imperfect, a technical term for when the skin just doesn't fully form over one part of the body. This pig will be fine most likely but will be scarred up and will not make a good show pig. You can keep some iodine on it to h...

Am I following this correctly that you were trying to get pigs out of this girl for 2 days?? Buckibri is right - you are way late in helping this gal. And I know that this is way late on my response for you but I hope that I can give you a couple of helpful pointers if you are going to farrow sows. ...

I would use Banamine on this case - 12 day withdraw period. It is an Rx drug so you need to get it from your vet. If you strictly want an OTC product, you can try aspirin - it comes as a water soluble solution and has 0 withdraw but is usually not as effective as Banamine.

Re: Matrix in sows?????
As long as she is actively cycling, Matrix will work. It is not labeled for sows in the US, but it is in Europe - they use a 9 ml dose in sows though rather than the 6.8 ml dose. A 14 day treatment will synchronize any random-cycling group of animals. If you know her cycle and want to extend it, you...
