Re: Oxytocin, DrAmy- hog doc
He never mentioned a limit, what he did tell me was it's a time release drug ( more or less giving her 10 cc in one shot would do nothing, needs to go a cc at a time)one time we had one that we ended up giving 7cc in 7hrs finally she started, once they get going you should have a piglet drop every 20_...

Re: New pig shower
Arcadia, you would do this because the judge sometimes may use this in a showmanship show to determine placement between you and other competition, (more or less to see who is paying attention in the show) if he or she touches your animal get the brush out while their still looking at your pig ,trus...

Re: Hog Barn???
There's a ton of things to consider when building a new barn especially if your planning on farrowing litters, first your saying 8 sows. The biggest regret anyone who has ever built a barn is this ......... why didn't I go bigger I don't have enough room, now with 8 sows gonna want multiple litters ...

Re: Ideas for keeping dirt pen dry around waterer
Even on concrete the still make a sloppy wet mess, the only two things I've used that I can suggest is to use straw to help keep it dry and if it's possible consider welding a catch pan on the post under the nipple,I did that on mine doesn't keep it 100 percent dry but it helps and they seem to drin...

Re: Pet pig questions
Not to tell you what to do, but if your planning on just keeping them as pets,I'd stay away from commercial breeds they grow way too fast in 2 years you will have 400 to 500lbers walking around, maybe look into some of the smaller hertige breeds like Mule foots or Magalistas they don't grow as fast ...

Re: New pig shower
Flo,here's a small list of the items you'll need at the show, cane or a show whip, hard bristle brush kept in your back pocket during the show(use it immediately if the judge touches your hog, feed pan, check with fair see if they supply a watering system for all the pigs (if not build a nipple water...

Re: Why is farrowing showpigs so difficult
Charlie, sometimes you have to take this risk to get the perfect show hog and breed to these heavy muscled heavy boned gilts, but that's probably your problem right there too much bone not enough room to pass the piglets thru the pelvic region,it's not always best to breed to these gilts that came ri...

Re: Butchering older sow
We kill one this size once a year, but it's split between 5 houses my parents, siblings, and my household, (we kill market size to fill the freezer for the rest of the year)most of a sow that size will be made into sausage if she's not too fat you can get some good bacon, you can have pork chops cut ...

Re: First time farrowing
Before I even begin I'll be totally honest with you piglet mortality compared to any other livestock is by far the highest especially in the first 3 days of life if she has 11 and you loose 3 your doing good, As Springbranch stated no more then 3 lbs a day toward the end, newborn piglets need to stay...

Re: newbie pen set up question
Scott, for two pigs an 8×10 would be be plenty of room(I keep 4 in a 8×10 inside(they also have an outdoor axcess pen via a guillotine door) , so if your stalls are 16×12 I'd go 8×12 you diffently want an automatic water system with fresh cold water hooked to a water line depending on what part of t...

Re: Opinions of 2 pigs
No way near as accurate as a scale but go get a hog weight tape, ya measure their length ,then around their ribs and it gives you an estimate probably within 5 lbs of what they weigh

Re: Stubborn York
She may just need to get her energy out first, try her in a larger pen, let her run around for a while then approach her slowly, (remember when you get to the fair any pig even one that's been trained to walk since it was 60 lbs can go wild when it gets to the showring, best thing to do is to try to...
