Re: Blind in one eye
Agree with everything above. We had a blind barrow last year. He walked with his head tilted. We had planned to show him, but just couldn't get him to trust us enough to get him out of the pen, and we work with the pigs a lot. Some things we could have done to help would have been to 1) work with th...

Re: Pet pig questions
Kune Kune pigs are a smaller breed -- and kind of cute. They may work well if you are looking to keep the pigs as pets.

Boar woes
Hello - Last year, we bought a boar on an auction. He was born in January. When it got to breeding season (Sept / Oct), we realized he couldn't get his penis out. The vet came out and looked at him and said he couldn't fix it. He thought it was a length issue. This year--bought a boar on an auction....

Butchering cryptorchid
We have a cryptorchid boar that we're going to butcher--we were able to cut out one testicle. I've read a certain # of days that he will need to be butchered by, but couldn't find it. Is it 120 days or 5 months old that we would need to butcher him by?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Stress Gene Testing Education for Swine Project Members (WI)
Hi - We are looking to put on an educational seminar for swine project members in North-Central Wisconsin. We would like the content of the event to cover the stress gene in swine, what that means, and how to test for it. Would anyone have any information readily available on this topic or be able t...

Breeding gilts - feed them 16% or 18%?
Hi - What does everyone feed their breeding gilts?
What difference will we see if we switch our gilt to 16% if she is a little more than average muscled? She weighs 310, and has a wide base and big top (not overly expressive though).
Thanks!

Re: County fair terminal
My suggestion would be to get on the committee if you are able. If you want the group to consider changing the show to non-terminal, it's likely the best avenue.
Does your show have breeding classes? Adding breeding classes might also be an option to move toward a non-terminal show.

Breeding back the same way?
Hi All- Wondering how often people go with the same breeding? Last year, a Bonechill x (Diversity x Big Blast) litter resulted in a gilt that was selected as Grand Overall and a barrow that was selected as Reserve Overall at our county fair. Should we consider the same breeding for next year? Thanks...

Thank you! Holding one this long is new to us. I'd rather push one than hold one, that's for sure!

Need 1 to < 1 lb gain / day on HSC powerfill over 50 days
Hi All! We have a barrow that weighs 225. Fair is 50 days away and we want him to finish out around 280. We're switching to HSC powerfill and champion drive to hold him. We've found he's extremely!!! efficient with feed. On 3 lbs of 18% , he gains 2 lbs a day. Top - Top is good, but would like to fe...

Re: Problem with show pigs walking.....
"Muleheaded" is a great way to describe the personality of a chester. We had a chester last year that we had walked to a little shed, 150 feet away from his pen, and he refused to go back to the barn. We tried for TWO days to walk him back to the barn, but in the end his will was stronger ...

Re: Gilt won't stand
Wow - for us, we definitely did not put enough effort into getting the sow to stand. With the gilts, a squirt of boar spray on their nose and they are rigid. It's a 13-year old boy breeding his own pigs. He had the semen in his cooler, and then we ordered more, and he's blaming me because we couldn'...
