Gilt in heat

I've had a gilt in heat for probably around a week now, maybe a little longer? This is her first time being in heat and we have county fair in 5 days. How long does their heat cycles usually last? Will she be done by fair?

High Flank in Gilt

I have a nice light cross gilt that has a high flank. She is almost four months old. Can I do anything to improve her flank? Thank you.

Re: Barrow won't cooperate

My advice for you is to not give up. My pig was just like yours. It didn't want to walk anywhere without its buddy. (They didn't even share pens.) I would award the pig with treats but only if they are good. Start out walking for short bursts of time. If they behave give them a treat. Each day slowl...

5 Weeks Until Fair, Pig Not Cooperating

My pig just finished getting over his separation issue, but now he has another issue. Whenever I take him out he starts squealing, and doesn't want to listen. I have trouble turning him, and he doesn't go where I want him to go. I walk him early in the morning and late at light. Are there any tips f...

Re: Pig eats but doesnt gain

My pig has had the same problem as well, but the good thing about him is he is proportional . Find someone that works where you get feed and they might be able to suggest different feed or supplements. Get your pig up a lot and keep it cool by rinsing with water. Lighter weights usually attract more...

Re: Tips for slowing down a hog

Whenever my pig gets a bit fast, I tap his forehead. Keeping there head up, and tapping under there chin tends to help.

thoughts on milk replacer

What are your thoughts on milk replacer with show pigs. Do you think it should be banned, or do you think it is fair? I'm just curious on your opinions. :D

Trouble Training Pig (tips or suggestions please)

I have a pig that has some trouble walking on it's own without the other pig. They have always been in separate pens where they can see each other. However, the pig is making a bunch of noise and not cooperating. The first few times we walked them they were together. I've been trying to solve this b...

Re: Barn setup - show pigs

You could put hay or shavings down into the pen. Another way would have a smaller pen so they cannot walk as much in the pen. (It is recommended if you have cement flooring.) Another if you get them at the same place is genetics. If you are worried about joint pain there is over the counter medicine...

Re: Keeping pigs still during weigh ins

If it was me I put down an apple slice or marshmallow for them to snack on. You could also put down a little bit of feed. They will be focused on that while you weigh them.

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

I am kind of embarrassed I'm posting again, but here it goes: Other people are talking about LJ has a dip in her back, and I agree, but here are some tips. If you decide you want to show this pig try to keep her head up or level in the show ring. This might make it less noticeable. A way you can do ...

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

I'm posting again to give you more input. I agree that LJ have a funky walk, but Sadie needs more fat and needs to be broader. In two weeks I don't know if you can fix it, but take a look at different feeds that might help her. In my opinion, pigs should not be docked for how they walk, because at t...

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

I would personally go for LJ. The theme at my fair is broad and heavy muscled (it's been like that for a few years!) If it was my choice I would definitely go for LJ, but all in all go with your instincts.
