Re: Adjusting to hand feeding
Give her a few days she still thinks she can eat whenever she wants to. She will start tearing it up.

Re: Feeding Hamp Gilt
Mix some Frosting XL or Moorfat in the feed and she should finish it all. Remember some gilts tend to turn into finicky eaters. Wet it down with milk replacer or actual goat milk.
The way you are feeding her now she will be 315 plus by mid October??

Re: Show box opinions
My son built a shelf that fits on the back of the pens at the show and just stores everything in a heavy duty Rubbermaid container on that shelf. It has lasted through years. No need for big expense especially if it's for 4h pig projects.

Re: Water and Diarrhea at show
If it's a terminal show I would not worry about it. It usually clears up by the end of the week and sale day.
Re: Paylean
The norm should be 0gm. Don't use it unless you are experienced with it or have someone helping you that is. If your pigs are stress positive don't use it. If your pig has enough muscle don't use it. Judges are going for softer pigs now anyway. I would just avoid it if at all possible. I'm hoping th...

Re: Need weight gain
Lower the protein in her feed and start slopping it with a high fat lamb milk replacer or find some actual goat milk.

Re: Need weight gain
It's just a filler don't give them any if you are still pushing for more weight. Only time we give any hay is when they get loose stools and it normally helps.

Re: Milk Replacer
Anything is possible but that's a lil more than 2.5 pounds per day for 35 days. Very difficult to do with summer pigs especially if it gets hot, they will slow down.

Re: Pelleted feed
Don't switch feed but take them off the self feeder and hand feed twice a day. They will be hungrier and eat more and gain faster. You should get another 80 pounds on them just by doing that.

Re: Milk Replacer
I would doubt that either pig will make weight in that time frame but it is possible for the 207 to squeek in. Make it eat more feed start adding heavy weight or frosting xl instead of eggs and the feed in take should increase they devour what ever is in front of them even if the are full with heavy...

Re: Milk Replacer
If they are eating that much feed with the items you are adding you should be able to hit 250 and 220 for the small ones. If they are well muscled and you want to try to get just a tad bit more weight you can drop to a 16% and it should have a little more fat in it.

Re: Need weight gain
I would not worry about that yet. Judges like the full look now and once it starts getting more length it will lose some belly, that's based on a 160-180 pound pig. Once you thinks it's finished eating and there is any feed still in it's pan then put a couple ounces of heavyweight or frosting XL on ...

Re: Need weight gain
It's doable but everything has to go just right for the next 45 days. Base feed alone probably won't get you there.

Yes, if feeding every twelve hours they will be starving. They did not always clean the bowls completely but did the majority of the time. They can't get enough of goats milk and frosting XL.

Re: Need 65 pounds in 25 days and pig won't eat
As far as pushing for more weight make sure you are not using self feeder. Hand feed twice a day and he will gain faster and eat more. The amount of weight you need will be difficult as most pigs won't gain much more than 2 pounds per day. We used the following and got three pounds per day for 10 da...
