Re: Managing Size of Piglets

When breeding gilts, a lot of things can come into play when it comes down to their ability to farrow without huge complications. Feed intake, litter size, body structure, and BOAR SELECTION. I don't think enough people in the show pig industry give boar selection on gilts the importance that they s...

Newborn piglet issue with back legs

I had a sow deliver 10 pigs two days ago. All were up and around, normal acting piglets at birth. Today, one of them is having issues working his back legs.....it's like he can't get his rear wheels up and under himself, wants to drag them behind him. If I set him up on all fours correctly, he will ...

Re: KGB -- problem with barrow on HSC feed

Thank you for your response KGB. This barrow will relocate to his new home in 10-14 days so I will make those suggestions to his new owner if the problem is still there when he leaves. KGB -- problem with barrow on HSC feed

I have a barrow, almost 8 weeks old and 45-50 pounds. He's in a pen with 8 other littermates. They were weaned at 30 days of age, and were initially on the HSC 309 starter feed. All did great. I typically add Showrite 19 to the HSC 309, once they are off the sow 7-10 days, and feed this 50/50 mix sl...

Re: broken back/ hump backs

Interested to knows thoughts on this issue as well. I've got a litter of 12 with 4 showing varying different levels of "hump back". Pigs are mid-January born, have been off the sow for almost two weeks, and are on high quality starter feed. Sow did not have any like this in her first litte...

Questions on boar with one testicle

I have a young boar pig in the barn, three weeks old today. When we were castrating others two days ago, this particular pig only had one descended testicle. While I certainly understand it is not desirable to keep a boar in tact for breeding purposes with these issues, I am weighing my options at t...
