Need to Hold HARD! Help!

I have a massive, heavy built barrow with lots of "padding" on him who is currently 275 ish (I can't get a perfect weight because he's squirrelly.). We have 19 days till weigh in and I need him to be no more the 285 hard maximum. What should I feed and how much to get him to loose some pad...

Re: Impossible show barrow

Ok guys and gals, I have a son who is 18 years old and is really good at getting his pigs trained. He has done this all his life. Hes got a couple top fives at state fair and numerous county fair titles. This year his best Barrow is untrainable. He can get in the pen and scratch his belly and he wi...

Holding Advice needed ASAP!!!! HELP!

 So... I have a show barrow that I'm getting ready for a early September fair. He was born a little earlier than ideal for this show but he was all I could get at the time... (I now have access to another Barrow who I will be picking up shortly) and he is so nice he is way worth it! Anyway, h...

Re: Advice Needed: Stubborn Dream Barrow.

One, I would say if you just got him then I would not start with the whip yet. I would wait a week or 2. Even though he is friendly he needs to build a bond with you and trust you. Then start working with him and make the whip a good experience. You can just rub him with it while you walk. Let him ...

Advice Needed: Stubborn Dream Barrow.

So I got this nice show barrow yesterday... :) And he is already got me scratching my head. He was born in January (I'm blanking on the exact date). He is incredibly friendly, and even though I didn't pick him for this reason, it's a nice perk. He wasn't at all stressed by the hour car ride home and...

Re: Show is March 23rd 2020, Need Advice I’m Fitter 35

Hi Dr. B, Does Ultra Full and Depth Charge dilute the energy density of the diet? thanks! I usually use Depth Charge for my holders... if he needs more fat maybe try Fat and Fluffy... I've had a little luck with that. Otherwise I'd just feed him as much as possible I was feeding my pusher last year...

Exercise is good for them in my opinion. Mine run in a pasture until i put them in a farrowing pen. The exercise helps build up their stamina for farrowing. You dont want fat gilts when they farrow, or their will be problems.
Thanks!

Re: HELP stubborn pigs

Hi! This year I have four pigs and 2 out of 4 are just horrible to work with. They are a duroc barrow and a york gilt. Neither of them respond to whips at all and refuse to walk away from their pens. I work hours with these pigs every single day but nothing is helping. I feel as if I’ve tried almos...

Re: training our pigs

My sons have been involved in our local 4H programs now for 5 years raising and showing pigs at our local fair. Recently an acquaintance of mine, who DOESN'T raise pigs claims we are training and working with our animals all wrong. So.... here you all go. Our project animals are bought the first we...

Re: Show pig not eating

Hey! First off best of luck! Here are my thoughts... 1. Check for Ulcers especially if he was a good eater before. 2. Try vanilla ice cream if it's too cold melt it... it is fatty and all my problem pigs have loved it (took one that was a terrible eater from 198 to 220 in 7 days) 3. Try another feed...

exercise questions pre farrowing.

Hey! I have a gilt due to farrow in 7 weeks 3 days. She is kept in a smaller pen the she is used to (at least since retirement from the show ring) and she is acting a little stir crazy. This isn't normal for her. Some people have suggested letting her loose in one of my pastures to run. But I'm conc...
