Trailer likes/ dislikes

Ok, after 4 years of slowly growing, and having some moderate success - we've decided we are in need of a low pro hog trailer. I've been asking guys at local shows, and have walked through a few. However, there seem to be a lot of little differences, and since I'm in Oregon - my ability to walk thro...

Re: To use Lute or not to use Lute?

Yes - I do use lute on 100% of my females. If you are at Day 114 - I'd give her the lute.

Re: To use Lute or not to use Lute?

Here's what I do: We give lute on day 113. Usually around 6 am. This assures us two things: First, we won't go over 114 days. Second, the gilt/sow will farrow 24-30 hours later. Which means we're not farrowing in the middle of the night. My understanding is that lute does not have anything to do wit...

Re: Hamp Boar

There's a really good bushwood line boar out in Oregon that does exactly what you are looking for. Check out Sandy River Show Swine on Facebook, and ask about "Deep in the Bush"

I have a Feb gilt out of him- and she's perfect on her feet, and moves very well.

I use High Octane Depth Charge - on every show pig. It's affordable and does an excellent job.

Paylean and ROG

After reading through this forum for awhile, I feel like I have a good understanding how to properly use paylean, and what it will do.

However, I'm curious as to how it affect the daily rate of gain. Will ROG spike? or Stay about the same?

Re: Farrowing help asap please

She was probably pregnant at some point - but absorbed the litter - not really sure. But she never had a single pig that time. She just looked like she had a small litter in her, and went through a few of the "motions" but there was nothing there. I partly feel that the contractions, and m...

Re: Farrowing help asap please

This sounds very similar to a psuedopregnancy I experienced with a york sow last year. - She she had a small "belly", dialated, had some discharge, she pushed and then it was like wasn't ever bred.

she came into heat in about 4 days.

Re: Feeding Gilts

Thanks KGB - I appreciate the info.

But I'm still stuck on this scenario:

Sound sire bred to sound Dam.

The 150lb gilt that has been on 18% protein, 5% fat 1.1& lysine, but her rear two walk in little "circles"

Feeding Gilts

Okay, so thanks to this forum, I feel pretty good about how we feed barrows - whether we need to push, or hold, or fill out. A lot of that came from reading all of KGB's thoughtful answers. (Thank you!) But, I kinda suck at feeding gilts. I've read, and been told - lower the protein raise the fat. B...

Re: Gilt swollen but won't stand

We just navigated through this issue ourselves. What I ended up doing was - as Piggy suggested - Let the sow into his pen for a few minutes. It took about 5-10 minutes but she did stand - that was day three, and she stood on day 4 as well. These spring breedings have been weird for us - unpredictabl...

Re: Payback - CHS Nutrition

Ok, I can speak to half of your question. I have fed Payback. And the results were - okay. It's easy to get and reasonably priced - it just depends on what your goal is. You can finish hogs out well with their products, but I doubt you'll make the final drive. I switched to show-rite and saw a BIG i...

This is a shoot 'em dead barrow at 14 days old.
Dam side: Heaven Sent

I'm really impressed with this litter, and plan to use shoot 'em dead again.

Dark Cross vs. Light Cross

I've noticed that people tend to choose dark cross boars over light cross boars by an overwhelming proportion. What is the reason for this? Is it just preference? I've never really considered it one way or another - to me a great boar is a great boar regardless of the color. Maybe I'm totally missin...
