Re: Farrowsure Gold
No worries. Wean pigs, give sow any vaccinations or dewormer while still in crate. Breed her when she stands. It's how the commercial guys push to 30 pigs per sow per year.

Re: Why vinegar on new cement?
Vinegar (acetic acid) neutralizes any concentrated limestone (calcium carbonate) on the surface. Limestone can occasionally cause skin irritation because the pH is too basic. Simple chemistry, vinegar and citrus juice probably easiest available acids without hazmat paperwork.

Re: Best Hamp Boar
buckibri, What sort of growth rates are you seeing with the frozen semen? What are your resulting litters sizes? The storage, insemination technique, and alleged smaller litter size are what has scared me from using. Seems a bit trickier to get them settled. Not saying the genetics don't have merit,...

Big cat Daddy at southern gold has worked for me. Pure Hampshire litters have pushed 2.2 ADG from 50 pounds on.

Re: Supplements for Weanlings
Usually a quality starter and prep feed is enough. I've had good luck with the honor program. Turn the heat up and they will bloom as well. Typically, supplements work best at 150 pounds and up.
Re: Premix
Depends on the formula and what ration you are mixing. Nursery diets have more inclusion than finisher diets. Also, most show concentrates have protein and amino acids added. Formula becomes corn, show premix, and or minerals. Have seen commercial recipes that are corn, soy, and premix. Premix in th...

Re: Coconut oil
Maybe, questions would be freshness and any spoilage issues. When trying to make showpigs, my experience has been that formulated products work better than individual ingredients.

Re: York boars
Bone buzz has shown some success on the sow side. Any stud that has a 3-4 year old York boar has them for one reason, and that is to make replacements. Use the search function on the sales history page, can find a bunch of pedigree examples with photos. Pick a stud you like to deal with and have goo...

Re: Blind in one eye
Maybe, gives the judge a reason to knock one down. Be prepared, blind pigs can be incredibly difficult to show, may walk with a head tilt. They also tend to get very used to their pen and have issues with new surroundings. If she is prepared to work with the pig and gain it's trust, it may show alri...
Re: medicated
Lysine is an amino acid, the building blocks of protein. Naturally occurring in some ingredients, highly researched that pigs perform better with additional lysine added to diet. Tylosin is the active ingredient in tylan, regulated by new regulations that went into effect Jan 1. Would require a VFD....

Re: Breeding a stress positive?
Your farm, your rules. I tend not to mess with positive females. Breeding and farrowing is tough enough without having the genetic wild card. Plus the resulting progeny are carriers at best. I will track down littermates and test them. Good luck.

Re: York Boar
Suggestion one, call a boar stud that you like to deal with and ask which boar they would recommend. Studs have more time to talk in Tuesday or Friday. Suggestion two, look at show results and pedigrees on NSR website. Any one with an owner number can get access. My Untouchable daughters don't do we...

Re: Advice for Selling Show Pigs
What does it cost you to make one? My belief is you should charge $50 more than cost for off farm purchases. Usually, I end up at $200-$300, but it depends on the market. I like to be in the middle of prices locally. Be prepared for the ones you sell to look better than the ones you kept. Preferred ...

Re: Keeping pigs still during weigh ins
Most livestock scales are set up for weighing animals in real time. Digital scales it is called the damper. Basically takes into account for movement. Beam and dial scales you just have to let them calm down and not be in a hurry. What type of scale do you have?
