Re: One stuck!

It's possible. Pigs that don't pass and the resulting infection can be brutal. That's why she was so sick. Not sure what your plans are for her, but non cycling females are typically culled. They have to show heat to be part of the program.

Re: need to gain weight

Both are fat supplements. Increases energy which increases cover. 170 pound Hamp cross with bad joints should need more fat, it means he's not a dink. Growing normally.

Re: picking the best at 7 days old

Additionally, at my place I use any problems in the litter as a decision point. Cryptorchidism, hernias, extra dewclaws, extra toes, etc. make the whole litter get disqualified, even if it is not on the one I'm thinking of keeping. Life is too short for problem litters. Your farm you can come up wit...

Re: Preg tone false negative or false positive

You're in the zone where pregtones get sketchy. Best advice is to try to find a vet or tech with an ultrasound, should be able to see some form of bones at this stage. Otherwise, will need to feed out until you see outward signs. May have picked up something if the boar didn't go through isolation.

Re: What's Wrong?

Have had this happen to me, heard of it from some other folks as well. Some gilts show little to no signs, need to be induced to get them out. Some end up not being pregnant, or litters of still borns. Theories I've heard are PRRS, mycotoxins, vaccination programs, or just plain bad luck. Not every ...

She is a pet, my house she would have only gotten two chances. Several lines have some fertility issues. May also be related to vaccination protocol.

Re: need to gain weight

1.5 pounds if average daily gain will get you close. Adding some fat to his diet can help, I use either high octane powerfuel or high octane heavy weight. Usually go on the low end of fat recommendations to keep their appetite up. Another trick I've used is to feed them high octane depth charge, the...

Sounds like a state of Ohio deal. I know good vets are hard to find, but might be time to look for someone closer.

Re: picking the best at 7 days old

Depends on your goal for the boar. If you want to show and sell him, he better be the 'one'. Trust me, when you see it you will know. Basically, the way boars grow you have until 50 pounds to cut them, then don't look at them until 250 pounds. They go through some funky stages where you will hate th...

Bed her deep, monitor her appetite and bowel movements. Check with your vet on appropriate pain meds.

Re: VCP relationship rules

Depends on where you are buying meds and what your vet will deem a valid relationship. Some are more flexible than others. May be the office manager that keeps all the paperwork making the rules. If someone has to do paperwork and be subject to auditing with a license on the line, there will be a fe...

Re: What has Changed

Two other things to consider: maybe folks are using the search function, lots of pages written over the years. Some folks also use the PM function to keep some things on the down low. I disagree with the comments about number of folks raising pigs. There are just better marketing and promotional too...

Bathe them prior to loading in the crates is one option. Have never heard of a teat prep for sows.
