Re: Must use boar

Hog Doc,

What kind of sow did you take Black Onyx to? I have been wondering where he works best.

Christian my first bit of advice is to make your own login ID on the site so we don't think you are your dad! ;) As I was reading your first post thinking it was your dad posting I about rolled on the floor laughing when you said you were new to the hog business. I thought it was your dad being fun...

Re: Barn sour pigs

I agree with just turning them out without walking them. That can work wonders especially if you can turn them all out together. Once you do that a couple times, then go try working with them. You work one or two at a time while leaving the other 2 or 3 out. Eventually you should be able to get them...

Re: Which Way Should We Be Going?

I picked soundness first, There is a lot you can do with a feed bucket.
Muscle second, after all you still need to have a pig with the potential to have enough of the right kind of muscle.
I picked depth of body and rib third, because I absolutely HATE no eating pigs.

Re: Cheap semen storage

I also use a small wine cooler. You just need to be aware that if you get a power outage that the cooler will reset itself and not stay at the temperature where you had it set. I have mine plugged into a UPS battery backup power supply so that will not happen as long as the power isn't out for a rea...

Re: Can't Get Gilt to Lock Up

Did she lock up for you on any of her cycles before the Matrix cycle? If she did, then I would bet money that she will this time as well, just wait and be patient. (I know that is easy for me to say, its not my gilt!) At my place, my girls stand on the average of 7 days after discontinuing Matrix. I...

Re: gilt heat cycle driving me crazy

A normal time is 18 to 24 days. So yes that is normal. If she is changing from cycle to cycle - like 19 days one time and 21 the next - not as common but it happens. Either wait to order semen when you first start seeing signs, or have somewhere local you can go pick up. If you want to order in adva...

Re: OLDER GILTS

You shouldn't have any problems. In fact they may farrow their first litter easier because their reproductive tract is more mature (especially with some of these crosses). Just don't let them get to fat prior to breeding.

Re: York boars

lostengineer: Really it kind of depends on what you are needing to do. Yorks, in my opinion (for what thats worth) are really all over the board right now. I think the Final Move line of Yorks have gotten so popular because of the amount of muscle they throw and they seem to get them to a more appro...

Re: Back Bone

mtbkmom: Do you have a business that you can have semen shipped to. UPS will guarantee delivery by 10:00am to a business but not to rural residential. That is what I do, I have it delivered to a friends place of business and I go pick it up. Even if it is later in the day when I pick up I know that ...

Re: bio hazard boar

He was at PSSS but I don't know if he is even around any longer. He was not a littermate to Detox, but had the same sire. He was a Toxic X Anchor X Messiah. For the most part he made some good designed pigs, but needed to be taken to muscle.

I know hes not proven yet, but the Doc100K boar at Shipleys could be real interesting. I have been told that the sow side of his pedigree is awesome. He is a Final Move son.

<t>Burrus,

Both of those pedigrees you used had the possibility of the red gene. So I would guess that is why you ended up with some solid white pigs,

MTBKMOM,

Yeah, I know white is dominate, but when you mate a pure Hamp to a pure York you will get all blues. BUT wh...
