Re: NAILE and Winter Type Birth Dates
The Naile is Nov 3rd thru the 20th depending on when the swine shows are during then, you want them around 6 months at showtime, so I'd say born mid to late May would probably be ideal

Re: How many litters per sow
I normally keep a sow for 4 years before we cull her at our barn , so I guess 5 to 6 litters would be accurate, there are exceptions a really good sow can go a little longer but we normally know it's time to get rid of her by two things noticing her heat cycles aren't as on schedule as they were whe...

Re: Breed and age!! I need some help!!!
It all depends on the types of shows your doing, if your doing purebred shows and competing against other Tamworths,GOS,or Large Blacks then sure but if your competing in a market show you more then likely won't do very well with these old heritage breeds compared to the Crossbreds you'll be going a...

Re: showbarn sidewall height
This would all depend on what your plans are for the barn, are you planning on eventually farrowing litters in the barn? If so you will want a lower ceiling height to hold more heat in, If your just using the barn for showstock you could go higher which is always a nice option (example you got your ...

Re: Panels for sow pen
We did pipe when we built our new barn, but the only disadvantage with pipe was there's gaps that the piglets can escape from so when the sows are farrowing we have to have a couple bales of straw on hand to seal up any places piglets can get out, I would think you could run into the same issue with ...

Re: Other Animals
Pigs don't even like other pigs that they weren't raised with let alone other species, they're not like cows, horses, donkeys, goats ,alpacas, or sheep that can be in mixed in a pasture together, swine need their own area separated from the rest of the livestock,I mean I did at one time have an exce...

Re: Buying a show pig herd
That all depends on what your actually buying (registered purebreds or crossbreds, all my stock is crossbred theres no market for purebreeds in my area) then ya gotta consider how good this guy's stock is and are they worth what they're asking, I wouldn't normally pay more then 1000 to 1500 for a re...

Re: Breeding Gilts
She'll certainly be big enough but do you self a favor and get her off the sunglo, if your planning on her having a litter you don't want her blown out on show feed keep her more natural, instead get her on a good sow and pig ration ,remember you don't want your sows looking just like your show hogs...

Re: timing to breed sow ?
I always go with 12 hour intervals and I never need or use more then 3 doses, (example you notice she's in full bore standing heat 5pm hit her with the first dose,5am second, if still standing hard hit her with the third at 5pm) always seems to work good for me regardless if it's a gilt or a sow, to...
