Re: Special feeding
Ya may wanna try the Purina show chow 09 series,509 for that weight has a wormer built in 1 to 2 bags (509 is expensive in my area $33 a bag) then go to 709 a lot cheaper feed this for the majority of the time your raising them, then switch to 809 toward the end to soften them a little, if still not...

Re: Bred a gilt a little early question
She's not the ideal age almost 7 months now, she'll be 11 when she has them, but as long as she's a bigger gilt and ya think she'll be pushing that 300 range when she has them I'd say you should be alright

Re: what feed should i give my gilt
Like Luxie said dont use concentrate, get her off the show hog feeds (no more Paylean ect.) You want her to get back to her natural build, a good sow a ration normally does this I use Purina Sow and Pig it always seems to soften the muscle tone down back to normal and get are gilts back to a more ma...

Re: Barn Pin Sawdust, Sand, or Shavings???
I would say it's personal preference, ours are on concrete so I bed with a layer of shavings and I also throw a couple slabs of straw in for them to make a nest, between the both it seems to keep the pens pretty dry

Re: Greenhorn help pls? Best and least expense pens at home
Breeding sows tend to do better on concrete, I keep mine in an outside pasture when their first bred but toward the end of the pregnancy they come back in the barn to have their litters on concrete, our farrow in pens are 10ft wide by 8 ft long enough room for her the farrowING crate and a heat box ...

Re: Mulch?
I would stay away from the dyed mulch could be poisonous to the animals, gotta remember mulch also holds moisture unlike shavings or sawdust that have had time to dry out, so it gets hot real hot, I've seen mulch and woodchip piles catch fire before, plus if its not dried all the way think about pin...

There's a lot of good boars out there that help with feet and legs but Wintex has Best man and a couple sons out of him with good feet, they also have Pumpkin Spice he's a York with awesome feet and legs, his half sister was the overall grand gilt at the 2014 world pork expo

Re: Soundest boar
All depends on what you mean by sound, by sound do you mean good feet and legs? Better rib, thicker top , better ham?
I guess my question is what is she lacking that needs to be added to these piglets?

Re: Red belt from Duroc Sow?
Normally to get red belts you wanna breed a Hamp female to a Duroc boar, red being recessive compared to black you may get a couple red belts while most will come outlooking like Hamps, color is always tough ya never really know what you'll end up with, I have a 4way cross sow (Hamp, Berk,York,Duroc...

Re: Back to back breeding
Like Apalizay8 said if her condition isn't too bad after nursing I'd give it a go, if she's to thin give her a heat cycle or two and put the feed to her to bring her back a little before ya breed her, I'm weaning a litter in 2 weeks and gonna breed the sow back to a cheap boar for a litter of freeze...

Re: Pens?
I prefer open panel for one main reason ventilation especially in the summer, closed panel won't get the proper ventilation through out the barn, considered this when we built our barn was gonna go with concrete block pens or wood at first ended up going with open panel and pipe and installed ceiling...

Re: sows not cycling
Are you using a boar or AI,sometimes not having the smell of a boar around can cause this , if you don't have a boar get some boar hormone spray I know Nasco carries it like 25 bucks, this may help, age of the sows can cause an issue too, unfortunately one of my favorite old girls in the barn wouldn'...

Re: What to look for in next gilt
You wanna know the history of the dam and the litter, prolapses and hernias can be hereditary,go with a maternal gilt they tend to have easier labors also count her teats you feed more piglets with 16 nipples compared to 14 or 12 ( and that comes from dad his nipple count will be the same as his daug...

Same idea with old berk lines look for heritage breeders they keep their lines bred for old look and build kinda like someone who still breed horned herford instead of polled
