Re: Building a sow herd.
I guess it depends on what your plans are for the herd, try to get more maternal looking gilts breed them to a more terminal looking boar not vice versa breeding more terminal looking sows often leads to problems when having their litters because of too much muscle in the hind quarters causing tough...

Sow Lift Farrowing System
I seen a video on YouTube about these farrowing crates, they work with an air system where it raises the sow 10 in. on a scissor lift as soon as she stands up ,then lowers her back to creep level when she lays down, just wondering if anyone has used them and an idea on the price

Re: Best Watering System?
[quote="Windfall Farm"]We installed ours in the barn, our water lines are under the concrete with a heating element built into the watering system, they cost 500 a piece but each one comes with nipples to supply two pens, the only downfall is that there nipples and not cups so the sows make...

Re: breeding for color
When you add Duroc into a dark cross you never know what colors you'll end up with, our one sow is a Hamp/York (Dam) Berk (sire) we bred her to a Duroc and we had belted, red belted, ones that looked like spots , red with black spots, and a couple blue butts

We installed ours in the barn, our water lines are under the concrete with a heating element built into the watering system, they work like a frost free hydrant where the water drains back down below the valve in the bottom of the line when not in use, they cost 500 a piece but each one comes with ni...

Re: How much did you sell your market hogs for?
PigDadd is absolutely right with some shows selling at market value, the PA Farmshow works like that, only animals that place are sold in the auction, the rest are sold to Hatfield for the current market price

Re: How much did you sell your market hogs for?
I guess it depends on your area and buyers coming to the market sales. I live in Northeast Pa the Wayne County Fair has probably one of the largest 4-H market swine shows in the state normally 250 hogs in the show hogs gotta weigh between 225 to 275 to get in, almost every kid regardless of how the ...

Re: Sunglo Explode
It's a feed supplement to provide carcass leaness ,and to maximize weight gain in hogs over 150lbs it contains Paylean in it, should be fed at a ratio of a half pound of Explode to 5 1/2 pounds of feed starting about 45 days before the show
