Re: When would you purchase a pig for a show beginning the first of October

In general, depending on frame size and genetics, a showpig should be around 250lbs by 6 months of age. That should help you as a guide. It's important that you buy good show pig genetics and have a feed program in place to achieve those results. Our county fair is the first week in October and we b...

Re: Last minute help please...

45lbs in 21 days is not entirely unusual. I would imagine pulling the self feeder will help. I would also weigh at a couple different times in the day. You may have caught her tanked up on water.

Re: Skin lesion? Scratch? (Help, new show mom!)

That looks like it could be the start of mites. They usually start on the belly and arm pit areas. The best thing we have used is Dectomax. It takes care of internal and external parasites. Your best bet is to give the shot. It's the most effective way to give the medicine. There is a product called ...

Fitter 52 from Purina. Is fast acting and targets those areas. Check the posts from KGB about the feed recommendations.

I would get a hold of your vet, especially so close to show, but draxxin and banamine might help.

Re: Need muscle on my gilt

So Moorman's lean maximizer work's like this:

4.5g/ton = 2 ounces per day (1oz per feeeding)
9g/ton = 4 ounces per day (2oz per feeding)

using the cup method suggested would be way over feeding. Legally you need to be feeding at least 5 lbs of 16% or higher base feed. Good Luck!

Re: Newborn piglet issue with back legs

You can usually fix this. It's called spayed leg. Research online for exact instructions, but what you do is tie the 2 legs together with just enough give to allow some flexibility. This helps get the legs working together when they are standing and walking. We just had one this last litter and with...

Re: Long Hair ????

We usually clip the body at 5/8", the head at 3/8" and then blend into the body. On the legs we usually go over with a longer guard to neaten them up, but then blend them back into the body starting at the top of the leg into the shoulder and hams. If you've done it right it should look na...
