Re: Fat on a Budget

I have another question. right now our pigs are 200lbs and 47 days out from the show. Should I start feeding Heavy Weight now or should I wait till we are a little closer to the show. Right now we are feeding 3lbs of feed and a 1/2 oat groats. Once we get to about 30 days out we will give them a lit...

Re: Keeping pigs still during weigh ins

If you are not against giving them a treat then give them a marshmallow when they get on the scale. Keep it right in front of their nose for a second then give it to them. That works for our pigs and we can get an accurate weight.

Re: Pen ideas

Our pens are made out of 4x4's, TPosts and Bull Panels. We have 1ft x 1ft concrete blocks on the ground and the covered by shavings. We have a barrier about 18in high from the ground up to keep the shavings in the pen. This can be felt or rubber, just anything to keep the shavings in the pens and no...

Fat on a Budget

I have a question. We have a gilt that is 73 days out from the show. She weighs about 160lbs and we are feeding 4lbs of HSC 709 and working in oat groats. Hitting our target weight is not much of a worry. This pig is heavily muscled. She needs to be softer over her top and loin area. She just really...

Re: Looking for shows in Texas

Thank you very much. I guess that I have been missing a lot of shows. Years ago TLJA was the only place to find out. The shows are the reward for all the hard work that you and your kids put in.

Looking for shows in Texas

Good Morning, With several of the major Texas shows coming up Tx Junior Livestock Assoc does not really have any prospect/jackpot shows listed. Does anyone know of any upcoming pig shows. Our county show is not until the 3rd week in April and we really want to get our pigs on the road and have some ...

Keep their Head UP

I have a question. We just started back showing pigs last year after a 15 year break. We went to a couple of jackpot shows then our county show. Some peoples pigs walked with their heads up the whole time with very little intervention of the shower. Their pigs never rooted or stopped to put their no...

Young Pigs and Feed

I know there are numerous topics on feeds and feeding. I have been out of the game for 20 years and now get the pleasure of assisting my daughters with Pigs. We have 2 York Gilts that are 45 and 40 lbs. The bigger one is a week or so older. The bigger pig is a little bit more expressive and heavier ...
