It worked on 50% of the sows I have tried it on. I tried it on two and one worked. Price isn't really an issue bc it is super cheap (<$10). Not for a big commercial herd like Darin, but for show pig guys it is certainly doable.

I know they will make it, but will your gates, pen, crate and all that other stuff make it! My pigs like to try and find their own feed when they are hungry.

It kind of is...He could modify shipping or packaging methods to ensure delivery of QUALITY semen. He will never know that the stuff is dropping below temp if you don't let him know.

Darin and Hampy,
Wouldn't Matrix be cost prohibitive just to delay a heat for a county show? I thought SVH said it was hundreds of dollars to get setup to feed it and for the product. With that said, if you already have it on hand you might as well use it.

It's basically overrun semen. You pay the low cost and they pick whatever is available.
IIRC you can't get a breeding certificate either.

Do any retailers carry them locally? Farm and Fleet, Fleet Farm, TSC, Menards, Home Depot, Lowes or are they an online only thing

I forgot, they look like a decent light. I like the 1500 hr life span!

Re: Heat lamps

My bad Mr Mote, I misread.

HANG THE LAMPS WITH CHAIN, NOT BALER TWINE!!! Twine is a good way to burn the barn down.

Re: What about Laxative?

Did I miss putting her on a laxative a couple of days before Farrowing? I think that's one of the biggest mistakes with newbies and good hogs. Just my 2 Cents. :D The gilt should be switched to lactating feed 5 days before farrowing and the feed should already contain a laxative. I used epsom salts...

If they are still in good condition it shouldn't be a problem. I generally wait a heat bc it fits into my plan for next show pig season better. You might as well leave them open longer on both ends rather than 4 days on one end and then three heats on the other. Clear as mud?
