Re: Sunglo Grower vs 18-G Meal

I've fed the Sunglo Grower and finisher the last two years. We had first in class the first year and Grand market hog last year. I've never tried the G line due to price - to be honest. I will be feeding it again this year.

Talk to KGB about Powerfill.

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

The bag should have recommended feeding. I would start at 1/2 lb. per feeding for 2-3 feeding and then increase to 1 lb. per feeding. You are right - you don't have much time, but any improvement is better than none! If I remember, you are holding one anyway - he/she will appreciate the extra filler...

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

I still like LJ's depth and width thru the middle, but his walking still bothers me. He breaks at the loin when he walks. You need to get some more guts on Sadie - feed depth charge or moorbody to get her middle to expand and her belly to drop some. Good luck!

Re: 2 pigs only 1 can show

Just my opinion - for what it's worth...... Initially I liked LJ better; more depth of body, but in watching her walk from the side - she walks a little funky - her back dips. May be due to her big hip and booty. Sadie - I like her length of body, but she needs more depth and softening. Both could u...

Sounds like you are on the right path. I second the Hvy. weight - had good results with it in the past getting 2.5 lbs a day gain. Good luck.

Re: Showmanship question

This can be so confusing for the kids - every judge wants something different. This year at our show the judge wanted the kids to use their hands to tap or move the pigs, when previous years' judges said "hands off". The judge this year also told the kids to back off their hogs more - he d...

Re: Hi Point Genetics - Dissapointing

This is my pet peeve!! Yes, I know breeders are busy, sell a lot of animals, etc. But don't offer to do something and then blow the buyer off. My daughter's first year showing goats, the breeder told us he would come by and check on them part way thru, and his wife used to show goats and would be mo...

Re: Blowing up or out a gilt?

I think what the judge is referring to is expanding her middle. Use something like Depth Charge, Moorbody, or TNT. I'm sure your feed brand has a similar product.

Re: calf calm or melatonin?

Whatever you decide to use - try it at home prior to the show to see how much you need to use and how the animal reacts to it. One year a breeder gave my son's hog something prior to being shown and the hog went crazy. Ran around the ring squealing the entire time. Couldn't even show it. Never again!!

Re: Need some holding advice, Berk gilt

We had to hold one for a while this year too. Held her using the Powerfill and Depth Charge successfully - won our local show. We weighed weekly - same day of the week and same time of the day. If she gained one pound a day or less, after a couple of weeks, I would add a little show feed for a week ...

Re: Moormans Supplements

We also show cattle, and the best fat supplement we have found and used is Stabilized Rice Bran. You can buy it at Tractor Supply - They sell 25lb bags labeled for horses - by Max E Glo. It comes in pellets or meal and is about $30 a bag. Start by adding about 1/2 lb. per feeding and slowly increase...

Someone mentioned recently that you can put it on their feed dry and get the same results -- anyone have experience with this. We tried it once but our hogs did not care for the taste, aside from the fact that our white hogs had red "Kool Aid" faces!!

Re: Rolls on pigs skin need help

Are they like wrinkles on the loin area? If so, they are hereditary. Some people say fat can fill in between, but I've never seen it happen. Some judges will dock you for it but we once had a grand champion at our local show with em.
