Pasterns

Post by SP41 » Wed Dec 18, 2013 4:16 pm

Have a barrow weighing 100-110 pounds that is mega heavy boned! His pastern set is ideal right now but know the concern of one being so heavy boned that they get a little weak there is a possibility! Is there anything you can feed or give him to 'lift' him up a little? Or trim his feet a certain way? Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is to make sure one of the 'big boys' judges your show or volunteer to provide about 4 inches of shavings for the showring! :D

You will probably hear about Bo-Se at some point. A pig that is short Selenium will commonly have weak pasterns and if that is the cause an injection of Bo-Se will strengthen their pasterns. If it is structural it won't fix it.
Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

pastern trouble is genetic therefore the problem has been intensified by selection or better yet, the lack of or just not knowing any better by these experts
