Pig needs to gain 95 pounds in 45 days

Post by Pebbles316 » Tue Aug 12, 2014 8:56 am

Our pig needs to gain 95 pounds in 45 days is this acheivable and what is the best way? Currently on Moorman's 18007 self feeder. No suppliments at this time. Thinking about Moorfat or Paylean? Pig currently weighs 125pounds.

Thanks,

It is achievable. The self feeder is the problem. Is his age wrong for the show date ? Or did you not pay attention to his daily gains early on ?

First time - we relied on our at teacher- pig appeared young/ small when we got her _ 25lbs on May 1
All in all there were 3 Hamshires and the next largest on was 45lbs- that pig is now 150 - so we have maintained relative weight gain. We did have some issues midway with worms/ lack of gain but my son has been at the barn 2x per day.
We were on a troft 2x per day when she was not gaining and 2 different at teachers convinced us to put her back on self feeder. Moving to Moorman's 14560 with probios to help her gut. Will look to paylean in 7 days when she nears 150.
Also considering B-12. Starting g to feed her in her troft 1x per day 3lbs and her self feeder for her other feeding.

We have been managing the pigs weight just think we got her too young- rookie mistake. Ag teacher assured us he knew what he was doing - 25 lbs when we got her May 1. Other 2 pigs that came with her were 20-25 lbs heavier and we have been keeping up. My son goes 2x per day when we were on the troft but she was not gaining so ag teacher told us to go back to self feed. He has worked very hard for the last 3+ months spending 2-3 hours per day.

Our plan is to move to Moorman's 14560/ self feed but measure her intake by putting in 30 lbs and see if she eats it in 5 days. Add probios for digestion and B12. When she gets to 150 in @ 10 days= start adding paylean and then finish her with something like moorfat

Get rid of the self feeder and start hand feeding. We just pushed some march barrows and had them at 260 before they were 5 months old. Take the feeder out in the morning and then feed the pig a half ration that night. Slop the feed and add in some fat. The next morning feed a full ration sloped and if she does not clean it up pull what's left after 20 to 30 minutes. We were feeding 3 times per day four pounds each feeding with paylean and fat and had gains over 25 pounds per week. Get them to eat all you feed them fast and you will be able to control their intake.

Next year plan on buying pigs that will be 6 to 6 1/2 months old at target show date. Also remember that gains will be slower during summer than winter. There are many tricks to feeding the correct way. Self feeders never work well unless the pig is very small.

I would start by ditching the 14560 and the 18007 if you need gain. I would go back to the 18241 (If you want to stick with Moormans). The 14560 and 18007 are higher fat. The pigs will reach their energy requirement for the day quicker with a higher fat. The 18241 is almost half the fat (energy) as the 18007. I would hand feed morning and night. Slop in the evenings and feed early morning when its cool. Ideally to gain that much they will need 6 pounds of feed per day. If they can't eat 3 morning and 3 evening, try an afternoon feeding to make up the difference. I would also advise to buy older hogs in the future. Paylean should help a little bit as well. But i would stay away from the fat as much as possible to prevent reaching energy requirements before they are full. Good Luck!

What show are you getting ready for. I would pull out the full feeder and switch to hand feeding asapand make the feed changes as others have said,
