How to clean/polish Aluminum sundowner trailer- HELP!

Post by BigPiggy » Sat Sep 06, 2014 1:31 pm

I have a six month old sundowner trailer. What products can you use to clean the aluminum and light scuff marks?
I had a tarp on the trailer and a few light marks from trailer and some dirt stains.
Please help with suggestion on products you have used to clean your aluminum trailers?
Thanks

Go to Blue Beacon truck stop in San Antonio and pay to have it acid wash.Cheap and effective. Do trailer inside and out. Also before the guys who are washing it start tip them 10.00 bucks and ask for extra wash...will look like new.voodoo

Piggy...D&D in Seguin will charge you 200.00 to acid wash. The last time I went to Blue Beacon it was 40.00 plus the tip. Acid wash that new trailer 2-3 times per year and you will be fine.I worked for Featherlite Trailers for a very long time and learned a lot about the business there.Just put me some Bud Lite Clamato beers in your cooler, see you soon. :D

Was this trailer polished from the factory or just mill finished aluminum? If polished from the factory I'm not sure if I'd do the acid wash. I just polished our 24' aluminum trailer that's 14 years old that only had a mill finish (prime candidate for acid washing) but I wanted it to have a mirror finish. I bought a product from California called zephyr and it's now a 14 year old mirror finish. This isn't something you can do in a weekend, but it can be done and cost me about $300 in supplies (already owned a rotary buffer). Your trailer sounds like it's brand new so it would be a lot easier than mine if you decided to tackle it. Acid washing will brighten the aluminum by removing a small layer but it's not a polished finish. If you're not up for a full blown mirror polish you might consider a product called gords aluminum polish. You apply it similar to a liquid wax for a car and it should work fairly good on your new aluminum. Good luck and if you attempt the mirror polish your trailer will magically grow about 10' longer until you finish then it will shrink back to its normal size!

The trailer is a mill finish. After you acid wash and/or polish do you wax it?

I don't know what the finish is. Its a 2014 14 foot sundowner pig style trailer. Its aluminum and its the trailer you get at D&D that is shinny and now its not so shinny. Don't want to ruin it. But I appreciate the comments. It has a smooth feel to the metal.

Piggy, If it is a mirrior finish I am not sure if you should acid wash it, I assumed it was the milled finish.Call the dealer and ask them. But if it can be acid washed, trust me and go to the Blue Beacon. This is the easiest and most cost effective way to do it.

If it's mirror finish you'll be able to clearly see your pretty self on it (like a mirror). If you acid wash it you'll no longer be able to see your self. If it's mill finished acid wash will be your quickest solution to brighten it back up and like voodoo said most cost effective. Hand polishing is a chore but it will make your trailer shine better than when it was new. However, you and the clothes you wear to accomplish this will be blacker than the back side of a black hole!
