If you have any studs close to you that can use next day ground transport you will save big. Our shipping from North Iowa is 18 bucks for overnight ground delivery.

Re: Best semen shipping rates
Premium Blend gets pretty expensive with the small litters and repeats.
Re: Best semen shipping rates
Small litters and repeats? I bred 3 females to PBG sires. All three hit FIRST time (no repeats).
Had litters of 12/11 alive,15/13 alive, 10/10 alive. You might have other issues besides semen quality from PBG.

Re: Best semen shipping rates
In terms of repeats I have had none to date from the small sample of sows and gilts I bred to PBG boars but the guaranteed settle program alleviates any concerns I had on that front. **** See Edit.
In terms of litter size I don't have enough sows to give you a statistically significant analysis but the average born live is over 11 and the last litter we farrowed from a Berk gilt bred to a PBG boar was 14 born alive and !6 total born.
EDIT: I forgot one gilt that did repeat when we used PBG semen. She also didn't settle either of the next two cycles when we exposed her by natural cover to one of our herd boars.

Re: Best semen shipping rates
Good point on sample size. I'm only looking at about 20 sows on three farms, but we went from sticking everything in Sept-Oct to missing everything in Late Oct-Nov. Whether it is semen quality or shipping problems (multiple orders) it went south fast late in the season.
As for the guarantee, I want them bred the first time not 21 days late.

Re: Best semen shipping rates
Have you thought about how sows/gilts have decreased conception when the days get shorter and it is darker for longer periods of time. Might want to expose them to lights at early morning/early evening to make them think it is still light for a longer period of time. The Oct/Nov group sounds highly suspicious for this a possible contributing factor--not all of the reason, but might be part of the reason.

With PBG semen:
On 3 gilts I had 13 live/16 born; 11 live/11 born; 8 live/8 born.

Re: Best semen shipping rates
So with my 15 sows and your 20 sows neither of us have anywhere close to enough animals to make any comparison of one semen supplier to another.
Of course everyone wants them bred the first time. Unfortunately in dealing with biological systems we can't achieve 100%. So if I am going to spend money vs collecting one of our own boars the guarantee makes that decision easier.
