Current Sow prices in your area

Post by pigboy07 » Fri May 15, 2015 9:02 am

Was looking at cutting back on a few sows but wanted to get a summer time litter out of them before getting rid of them. However, I was curious to see what the local market was doing for sows and I was BLOWN away by how bad it is right now. On Monday the local market sent 15 sows through the auction
Light sows---Low--18.50 and High--19.00
Heavy sows--Low--22.25 and High--25.25

Was just curious as to how other markets were doing in everyone's area. You go and take a 450 lb sow to market you're looking at 112 or so and that's before all their fees come out. Was looking at a smaller sow I had probably goes 350 or so figured there's NO WAY I could send her now heck she'd barely buy the gas needed to take her there.

There is more to sow price than just weight. One of the fascinating things Is watching how sows get sorted. I never had any idea it was as detailed as it is.

That said it sounds like the prices you quoted are about $5 under what the buyers here are bidding.

It is worth to shop around
I was seeing 19 to 25 on sows
I took three in Ave 500 pounds sows into Bob Evens he paid 44 around mid April. That added about 100 bucks per sow. Direct might be the way to go.

The other question Do you have your PIN TAG's
I herd buyer's are ripped Producers off for not having them.
I ordered a set of about 25. Took about two weeks from the time I placed the order.

I put them in same day took to Bob Evens. The Scale man was happy

Your prices are about the same as reports in PA. Other option is to run her through a butcher shop yourself. Probably looking at $150-$200 to have her made into sausage. I'm kind of a sausage fanatic, nothing better in the summer than brats, hot Italian, or your favorite flavor on the grill. Give some to your neighbors for living next to some pigs, goes a long way.

Yeah I do have the PIN tag's and was planning on using them wasn't for sure how much of a difference that would make when taking them to United Producers.

We are a little better around here. It is grilling season and all sows in WI (ok...most) go to Johnsonville Brats. That helps the prices a little. Not really worth shipping unless they are pure junk.

We made a connection on Craigslist that will buy our big sows for $100. He comes to our farm and picks them up so we don't have gas, trailer time, or my time wasted. He makes tamales out of em and sells them.

The other thing we do is get a tax write off when we take a sow and turn her into ground pork for food pantry donations. Usually the processor will cut us a deal on processing since the meat is being donated.
