Am I overreacting?

Post by Bowtexan » Tue Jul 26, 2016 9:03 pm

I don't like anyone coming in my barn when I'm not there. Today my County agent came to look at my County pigs unannounced and without me there. He also has two kids that show against us and everyone else. So he gets to see everyone else's pigs and see if there any good or not but we don't get to see his. Plus he got to see what all I feed. I'm not against him coming. That's his job. But at least give me a call so I can be there. And especially to have everything put away. I will be calling him in the morning. I will be nice and ask for the courtesy of letting me know ahead of time. By the way there are 2 No trespassing signs at my property entrance and a keep out sign at my barn. Am I overreacting?

I'd be upset. I'd tell him, try to be polite. Anyone with an education knows that you don't do that.

i wouldn't be so polite, that's not his job. no matter if it's your pig barn or chicken coop he has no business on your property without your knowledge. that's BS and that's what he needs to understand.

Personally i think you're underreacting. That is absolutely BS and as SPRINGBRANCH said, that is NOT his job. I'd let him know, not so politely, that it will NOT happen agian. He is using his job to be nosey and gain an advantage that others do not have. Not cool.

I'd be pretty ballistic if someone was roaming around my barns uninvited and without following any biosecurity. I had it happen once and after the butt chewing they got I have not seen them again.

NOT COOL AT ALL! The only time someone comes without you being there is ONLY when you give them permission. He did not have your permission.

Your county agent needs some education about bio-security, not to mention basic manners.

Thank for the replies. I had every intention of calling him and voicing my opinion, but I am gonna wait till I run into him in person. It's a small County. That way I can have a conversation and explain my point of view. I do need to say that I like the guy. And I think he does a pretty good job running our county show. But to me this was crossing a boundary that I don't want crossed again.

Do not wait and just take him offguard with a "casual" conversation. Set up an appointment with him in his office to discuss his most recent office and "tour" of your barn. Sens this by email and give him options of dates/times. Then sit down with him and bring an outline of points of concern so you stay on target with all points covered. If not happy with results, then call his regional boss.

May need to read the rule of your county show before saying to much. I copied these out of ours.
Show Association representatives as directed
by the association president permission to enter unannounced onto the
property where the exhibitor’s project is located for purposes of
inspection.

I would say that Unannounced and Unaccompanied are 2 different things. They can come when they want, but they cannot enter into barns without talking to the person whose barn it is without complying with their specific biosecurity measures. This is clearly 2 different issues. I would have that person covered, washed, hat off, jewelery off, etc and then provide rules to follow while in the barn----eyes only and do not touch anything, etc and I would be there to be sure that the person does comply. If not they will be told to leave immediately.
