Showmanship Rant

Post by buckI » Mon Aug 29, 2016 10:17 am

Kids finished up their fair a while back. Had a really good fair except for showmanship which is our main focus.

We had a judge this year from the midwest that turned the junior showmanship final drive into a circus act. Pig panel alleys/chutes the kids had to maneuver through, around a guy in the corner etc. Into the pens. Out of the pens. Switch pigs. Back into pens but hold them without closing the gate. Out of pens. Back into pens.

Champion showman was easy. Kid did an outstanding job and outshowed everyone else. For 3rd overall the judge chose a kid that stood between his pig and the judge with his back to the judge while keeping the pig in the pen. Kid that was reserve had a pig get out of his pen, circle the judge, get driven back into the pen all the while everyone else is in the pens. Major screwup. Yet the judge awarded the kid reserve.

Kids that ended up in the 4th and 5th hole completed all the tasks without any screwup. Frustrates me to see a judge stretch out a drive with tasks to be done and then not reward those who complete them and roll those that can't complete them.
