Youth Project Sponsorship

Post by insulator » Wed Oct 05, 2016 3:01 pm

We have a couple of new kids in our FFA that would like to show pigs, however they are not financially able to do it. I know that there are folks out there that have sponsored projects for youth. My question is how do you go about finding people that are willing to do this or is there other options? Thanks!

I am a small breeder and each year I donated a pig or two to underprivileged kids in our county to show. I then ask other small breeders in our community to help with feed. Every kid in our county gets to sell one animal through our premium sale so the next year these kids have the funds to get their animals and feed the next year

We do the pretty much the same thing here as what Luxie describes except we buy the pigs instead of farrow them ourselves. I would think if you ask county leaders, 4H advisers and AG teachers they would be able to point you in the right direction of somebody willing to help in your county.

Our local Ag Credit Union will give the kids interest free loans for their projects. It is a great program for the kids. The kids are allowed to sell 2 market hogs at our county fair so if they do a good job with their project, they do good enough money wise to pay back their loan. The sale averages about $5.00 per lb.

Our farm credit service does the same they get loans for like 1% or something plus they build credit history so they have really good credit when the are 18. The loans gives the enough for the pig food and fencing stc. Good luck.
