20,000 for a 50# gilt?

Post by EMC » Sat Oct 22, 2016 6:38 am

Am I just missing something or is paying $20,000.00 for a 50 lb gilt just a tick too much?

I would rather sell one than buy one.

Sounds like a bargain! Did you see what some of the BARROWS have been bringing? $27,000 if I recall.

Do most believe those are real numbers where money changes hands?

I have no idea. I'll let you know when we sell one for that whether it was real or not!

I would like to see a pic of a $20,000 + pig. Was this an online sale?

I would highly doubt that the auction fees would be waived whether they actually sold or not. I have had lots of experience in the auction business and have never seen commissions waived on selling prices whether the animal actually sold or not, buybacks are always charged as if sold, if not it would look unethical.

Yall should come to Texas and watch a sale... lol. I watched a boar pig go for 24k a few weeks ago. Then the next day at another sale, I watched 3 go for 55k, 24k, and 14k. All three were from one guy. When his 4th only went for 1200 the ring guy said, that'll hurt his average.

Hey, and I have a question. While at a few sales, I've watched the seller bidding on their own pigs driving up the price. Seems like there is something wrong with that. Or is it just me?

It happens, usually seller has a mail or phone bid, sometimes they are just protecting them. Several folks use a ring man, auctioneer, or an associate to handle. Same process, but the seller isn't seen raising his hand.

I guess there's always someone who'll buy a winner. I'd rather make my own.
