Videos added! Gilt walking bow legged, toeing in on rear

Post by gobigorgohome » Mon Dec 11, 2017 12:51 pm

My daughter has a really nice gilt weighing 185lbs. that recently started walking, what I'd describe as bow legged. She is heavy boned, huge hipped. From the rear her feet land inward when she walks. I don't think she is short strided on the move, but looks "funky" for lack of a better word when viewed from the rear. She is currently fed Sunglo 16% finisher; only eating 5lbs/ day which is all she will clean up.
Any way to correct or improve this? Our show is in 40 days.

I had trouble watching the video in the one drive app. You can choose to download the video and view it that way if your device has trouble playing it.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a structural defect that "should" or "will" get called out every time by any judge. It doesn't matter how well the animal looks in all other traits. When a judge or breeder talks about "squareness" this is part of it. Bummer because she is nice otherwise. Unfortunately nothing you can do.

Make sure that the gilt drives good so that the judge doesn't see what you don't want him to see.

As a judge sorts to the top he will see it. They always get the look they need regardless how hard you are trying to hide it.

She will be shown in a market show at our small local show - about 45 hogs. Was planning on using paylean at the end - Wonder if that will make it worse? I think she strides out well now, not choppy or tight.

I hate to tell you this, but feeding paylean would not be a good choice. She may not walk any worse, but I have seen some with bad structure in a lot of pain because their structure could not handle the extra weight from the muscle. Then they don't walk from the pain, and you have bigger issues. Also, I had two pigs that had their back legs in like that and got pink ribbons on both. The only things you can do are hope other pigs have a structure problem like that and you need to try and hide it in the show ring. At my show, the judge puts the pigs into holding pens, starting with the worst and going to the best. I don't know what the requirments are at your show in order to sell, if you are selling, but hiding the back legs until you get to the point would be a good choice. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

If it was me I would have her on something like a 12% sow feed. As basic of a feed as you can find. I agree that any judge worth anything will see it immediately. I have had some luck basically stopping muscle growth and letting their skeleton continue to grow. It won't make it go away totally but will minimize it. The last thing she needs is more muscle. I absolutely would stay away from paylean. That will only make it worse.

We feed Sunglo. This gilt is on 16% finisher, but another we have that is heavy muscled is on Mello - 14%.

I was worried about this one getting too soft, but I guess being too soft is better than not able to walk.
Just frustrating because my daughter was excited about this one.
