Coyotes and Young pigs

Post by scott4h » Thu Jan 18, 2018 11:08 am

We are getting our pigs in a couple weeks, they will be about 60 pounds. 2 of the pigs are kept in a fenced area on the property with a 4x8 shed to keep them warm at night. The Property recently had some coyote attacks where many of their ducks and chickens and even a large turkey got attacked by coyote(s). Im concered about the pigs being attacked as well. Im wondering if I should create a door for the shed and lock them up at night? until they get a little bigger, We are not on the property everyday but I think the owner would help us with that. would this be too small for the pigs, should I plan on having a water supply in the shed then? Or do you think coyotes won't go after pigs of this size?

Coyotes will go after a pig any size if they feel like they can take it down and kill it. I assume you have electricity at this location. I would suggest a hot wire around outside of the pen at the bottom and possibly the top. This would prevent any coyote from digging under the fence or going over the top. If you pens are tall enough then the top wouldn't really be a problem. When you let the pigs out you just unplug the hotwire and everyone is safe.

thanks for the info, the fences we have are short, I would think the coyote can just the high wire if it wanted too. I might just lock the pigs up at night
