Hernia repair, is it worth it

Post by farmersdaughter01 » Tue Apr 07, 2020 7:37 pm

My daughter and I are new to show pigs. This is her first year showing (county 4h level). She has 2 gilts, one of which has (I believe) is an umbilical hernia. She is just shy of 3 months old, it just started developing in the last 2 weeks. Is there anything we can do at home to reverse it, or is surgery the only option? Is it worth doing surgery? How will it affect placing at fair? She is a really nice looking gilt otherwise.

If it just now started surgery is the only option which will cost you 150 or so if memory serves because they knock the pig out. The one I has repaired busted later, didn't effect the growth of the pig though.
