On our feeds (HSC) either 309 or 509.

Not having them "melt down" could be a loaded question and answer. NO Paylean will be the biggest thing you can do to prevent that.

But remember, when you feed a pig to maximize it's look to me that is not unethical. You are merely getting the pig to express more of it's genetic potential. What your customer feeds after purchase is up to them. I'm not saying they HAVE to feed everything you were feeding, but if they feed a cheapo feed and the pig melts, that is their fault and not yours. There is NOTHING wrong with great nutrition.

What's the ideal age of a showpig and what is the most efficient way to hold them back after they get to 280, for example, 3 weeks before showtime? Also, to keep them looking fresh.

Kevin,

Will champion drive give similar muscle expression as paylean? or is it designed for just the topline?

Kevin,
When using paylean, what recommendation do you have to prevent the splitting of the outer walls of the hooves. I know that this seems to be an issue with paylean usage.

Hillman:

Champion Drive doesn't add or remove any body fat. However, Fitter 35 does. You might replace the Champion Drive with Fitter 35. Once you get the pig where you want it, then consider feeding 1 lbs Champion Drive and 1 lbs Fitter 35.

To me the "ideal" age for a showpig is about 6 to 6 1/2 months old. BUT, others have very different opinions. Mine is based on you shouldn't have to slow or speed up growth very much at all at 6 to 61/2 months of age when shown.

Again, in my opinion holding a pig at 280 lbs for 3 weeks is not efficient. And you expect the pig to look far less than it's best when this is done. My suggestion is to purchase the right age pig, and weigh the pig often, especially the final 45 to 60 days. Knowing what the pig weighs and feeding according to weight gain, and what the pig needs is the way to go in my opinion.

Holding for extended periods only leads to aggravation, failed results, and disappointed kids.

Porcine:

Champion Drive also works on other parts of the pig's body, but it is NOT Paylean. Paylean (ractopamine HCl) is a repartioning agent which means when feeding Paylean more nutrients are shifted into lean deposition (muscle) and away from fat deposition.

Champion Drive doesn't do that, so it doesn't work to the same extent or as fast as Paylean.

There are some additives in High Octane Paylean to prevent the hooves from splitting. BUT, there are some differences on how pigs handle Paylean (breed differences). The best thing you can do for split hooves is to keep them moist (don't allow them to dry out). Applying a dressing much like a horse hoove dressing helps.

Also, time on Paylean and dosage plays a huge role on pad and hoof integrity.

oltmanjt21;

I think that's right, sorry for being slow and out of order.

I'm trying to find out what exactly the Ultracare creep feed is called (I work with the Showfeeds exclusively....I'm not on the commercial side, but I'm attempting to find out).

For deworming the only thing I know of that is still availabe is Safe-Guard (fendbendazole), and Ivomec.

If you use Safe-Guard remember to determine the dosage based on bodyweight and then divide by 3 and give 1/3 of the total dosage each day for 3 consecutive days.
