Using depth charge while pushing

Post by gobigorgohome » Sun Dec 20, 2015 7:27 pm

I have a barrow that I need to gain 2 lbs / day for next 32 days. He has been doing this already on 16% feed and heavy weight. I would like to add depth charge now to give him more rib shape but don't want to reduce his gain. What is the best plan to accomplish this?

Also, I am giving him 8 oz of heavy weight a day. If I increase that he seems to back off the feed - is the 8 oz enough for what I need to accomplish?

Thanks!

Yes on the 8 oz per day Heavy Weight on the current diet. If you add Depth Charge it will add bulk and dilute the energy density of the diet. So, without increasing Heavy Weight he will gain less. But by reducing the calories in the diet you should be able to increase the Heavy Weight and not affect intake very much. I would start at 8 oz per day Depth Charge and increase the Geavy Weight to 10 oz. That might do it. If not, in 7 days increase Depth Charge to 1 lb per day and in another 5-7 days increase the Heavy Weight to 12 oz. this might work and it might not. But you will be offsetting the calorie difference and should be able to add cover and fill at the same time.

What is the shortest time period to feed depth charge in order to get the desired look for the show? I've heard some people feed it almost the whole way thru and some just at the show. What do you recommend especially since I am having to push this one?

Thanks!

I think that depends upon how much help the pig needs. Some pigs do need it for a long time. If your pig has some rib shape then probably 2-3 weeks.
