Middle and backend

Post by PulledPork » Wed Jul 13, 2016 6:52 pm

We have a Spot barrow that weighs 233# right now. We have another show 8/11. Last judge said front looked amazing but the middle and rear was disappointing. What can I do feed wise to help?

I'm not sure what the judge is referring to, If it was depth they usually say that and in the rear may mean flank, bowed between rear legs, narrow. The last years Houston show we did we took 8th in total and there comment was much like that, perfect hog just clean up the back. Now our hog in this class had a low lying flank and I believe that's what he meant but not sure.

Whats the diet of the hog now and how much?

We are very new at this. We keep them at our ag center and they basically are on full feed. I do go out once a day when we walk them and mix in Champion drive with the 709 in a separate feeder.

So basically I need to add rib and rear flank. I'm shutting down full feed and going to feed twice a day. Barrow weighs 240 and would like to see around 270-275. I have access to 809, champion drive, depth charge, and heavy weight. Show is 8/13/16. How would you feed?

Luckily you are plenty big for your show. Actually you'll need to start holding weight or you'll be around 300+lbs. To add the depth of body you want, you will be using products that are great for holding weight so you're in a pretty good spot right now it sounds like. On the other hand if he needs muscled up, you'll be using products that increase efficiency and weight gain. Its hard to say without pictures but from your description, you'll also need to add some muscle? How much fat cover does he have now? And how is his structure? (Any bowed hocks or stiff joints?)

I have been feeding:
16ozs 809
16ozs Champion Drive
8ozs Depth Charge
4ozs Heavy Weight

His back legs are like twigs and ribs have no cover. Front end looks good. He isn't eating much at all right now.
