Holding Options KGB

Post by bcpigs » Sun Jul 23, 2017 9:40 pm

Less than 2 weeks to show and are within 5 lbs of max weight. Any thoughts on best options, get confused between options of using Fitter 35,power fill ,depth charge. Been feeding 2 lbs fitter with 1 lbs steam rolled oats along with 1 oz pay lean / day split between two feedings. Barrow is conditioned the way we want but need to minimize any additional gain.

High Octane Powerfill at 3 lbs per day = about 1.0 lb/day gain

High Octane Fitter 35 at 3 lbs per day = about 0.25 lb/day gain

Because Powerfill is 12% fat, and Fitter 35 is 2.5% fat. It's the energy (calories) in the product that causes the difference in growth rate. By the way, pigs grow well on oats, and 2 lbs Fitter 35 isn't enough lysine and other amino acids.

Paylean increases growth rate (at least for the first 14 days). If you have feed it for longer than 14 days, it's probably not affected growth rate any longer.

Depth Charge is NOT a "holding" feed. It provides fill. It doesn't meet nutritional requirements (at least you would need to feed 10 lbs per day or more to get close to meeting the lysine needs of a pig. So, Depth Charge is used for helping to keep the pig full appearing.

To minimize growth rate feed;
(total daily feed; divide into 2 equal meals):
High Octane Fitter 35 3lbs
High Octane Depth Charge 8 oz

Growth rate should be about 0.25 lbs per day.
