mixing my own sow feed??? Can it be done???

Post by Ericka » Sun Oct 08, 2017 2:29 pm

I had a thought today after stumbling on a video on youtube and wondered if it is possible to mix my own sow feed at home. I raise show pigs and am always looking at options for feed for my sows. All the feed mills close to me want me to order 3 ton and I can't go through that amount without it going bad. Looking at feed companies online they even give you the receipe of how to make it. I am not even sure that it would be cost effective but worth a try. I have a livestock scale that can weigh 1000 pounds at a time. Please let me know if it would be possible? Thanks

California about 35 miles north of Fresno. When looking at labels of a sow feed what ingredient should come 1st? I have seen a few different things. To me it should be corn. I hope this will be an option for me.

Purina has the Natire’s Sow and Pig concentrate. You just add corn. Other ingredients if you have them.

We have a cement mixer that we keep in our feed room and have a bin with cracked corn in it. If you know the ration it is easy to do and can be customized to each groups need. Your feed dealer can figure pounds of corn (wheat, rye, milo, etc) to pounds of protein or you can figure yourself using the Pearson square method

I put together an Excel spreadsheet to use for customizing diets the NM Sow & Pig Concentrate. Much easier than a Pearson Square.
