Holding Options

Post by srd1984 » Thu Oct 19, 2017 11:51 am

Have a barrow for a late January show that is gaining very well. On 10/13 he weighed 136 lbs and would like him to be 280 lbs on 1/19/18. What is best option to slow him down without compromising muscle and body? Currently on 709 open feed. All HSC supplements are available in my area.

Its way to early to hold. You need to keep weighing the hogs regularly but I would not hold a hold until they at least hit 180 to 200 lbs. Right now that hog is still developing and you do not want to compromise his/her development. You have plenty of time to hold after that if you are will to spend the money on feeding it powerfill/timed out, etc. There are plenty of supplements out there you can feed it once you hit those weights that you can still mold that hog based on what you think it needs to look show ready.

I suggest waiting for the pig to reach 150 lbs.

So, he now weighs 136 and you want him to weigh 280 on January 19th. That equates to 1.565 lbs per day between now and January 19th. (280 - 136) / 92 days = 1.565 lbs/day.

That is certainly doable. But, by the time he gets to 150 lbs, that average daily rate he can gain is going to be somewhat less. When he reaches 150, feed a mixture of half Powerfill and half 709 at 3.5 lbs per day.

Once he gets to about 180 lbs you can begin to adjust the diet etc... E-mail me and I will reply with some information about slowing weight gain (NOT holding). The pig will be fine, you are not going to risk muscle, development etc....
