70 lbs in 30 days possible?

Post by ALLEFT » Wed May 09, 2018 11:19 am

We have about a month till our show and need to put on some pounds. I don't have access to a scale but I used a weight tape and it said my daughter's barrow was at 128 lbs. Is it possible to reach 200 lbs in a month? Our minimum weight is 180 lbs though?

I would say it is possible. A pig will normally gain 2 pounds a day. If she is gaining those two pounds, and on paylean, I would say it is very possible to make weight, and probably your desired weight. The one concern comes on the day the pig is going to the show, as it can lose up to 10 pounds in water during the ride due to stress. Be sure to let the pig drink as much water as it wants out of a pail to try and keep the weight on her. I hope this helps. If not, let us know the average daily gain of the pig, the feed it is on, etc.

Yes it is possible. 70 lbs divided by 30 days = 2.5 lbs/day gain.

But, some clarification; a misconception is that "pigs gain 2 lbs per day". That is incomplete and incorrect information. Pigs CAN average gaining 2.0 lbs per day when they weigh about 200 lbs. It doesn't mean they will. It depends upon a lot of things; genetics, nutrition, environment, health are a few big ones.

But, from 40 lbs to 250 lbs pigs on usually average gaining about 1.8 to 1.9 lbs per day. Pigs dont' gain 2 lbs per day when they weigh 12 lbs, or even 100 lbs most of the time. Think about it 2 lbs is 16.7% of 12 lbs. Nothing on earth will gain 16% of it's bodyweight per day. Pretty much physically impossible. So, pigs start off gaining slowly, but as they grow and gain weight they begin to gain faster. If you look at performance data from commercial hogs they usually plateau at about 200 lbs. But, there are other factors involved. A commercial confinement pig usually has 7 to 7.5 square feet of space. Compare that to a 16 X 16 foot pen (4 hog panels wired together) that provides 256 square feet of space.

Anyway, my point is a few things will help your pig gain weight:
1. a quality high energy base feed (like HONOR Show Chow....I'd recommend 909 as they eat it extremely well)
2. add more energy in the form of High Octane Heavy Weight (start at 4 oz/day and increase by 4 oz about every 3-4 days until you are feeding 12 oz/day)
3. add High Octane Paylean 900 at 1 oz per day for the final 21 days
4. make sure the pig has been dewormed effectively (if using Safe-Guard administer over at least a 3 consecutive day period)
5. this time of year make sure the pig is cool by using wind (a fan) and water if needed (high heat will negatively impact feed intake)

I am feeding seven pounds of 809 and eight ounces each of power fuel and champion drive a day. Unfortunately I am on Maui and no one on island carries the honor products. I ordered the feed for the whole 90 day project one time. I have just enough feed and supplements to keep the same feeding amount. I am not worried about the travel time because the show is ten minutes away. Is there anything else you think I could do to help him gain faster? I weight taped him today and according to the tape he is 137. That now gives me 23 days to gain 43 lbs. I am hoping the weight tape is underestimating.

Also, if it looks like it is gonna be close, is there anything I can do the day of the weigh-in to gain a few more pounds?

43 lbs in 23 days equates to 1.87 lbs/day. The pig SHOULD do that. Especially, if you are feeding 7 lbs per day of 809. That is lot of feed for a pig that size. But, if the pig eats it keep doing it.

Also, make sure the pig is dewormed effectively. If using Safe-Guard administer the dose over at least 3 consecutive days. Safe-Guard is a slow kill.

Also, how are you guys out there? Maybe someone else knows way more about Hawaii and where the volcano is currently erupting, but not I. Are you close and if you are, are you ok?

I wormed him with ivormectin a little over a week ago. I hope he makes weight. If I can get my hands on some paylean should I just add the 1 ounce to what I'm already feeding or should I cut back on the feed a little bit. And also how confident are you with weight tapes?

I am on a different island from the volcano that is erupting. We are getting some of the smoke from the eruption here but nothing like what they are going through on the Big Island. Hoping the best for the people over there though.

Weight tapes are fairly accurate. if you can get some Paylean feed it during the final 21 days. if you can I suggest increasing Power Fuel to 1 lbs per day when you do. (if possible)

Yes. As a matter of fact, ANY High Octane supplement you have left over put in a freezer back and toss in the freezer. When you take it out to use it will be just as good as when you put it in the freezer.
