Powerfill while trying to get fat cover?

Post by cracklethepiglet » Tue Jun 18, 2019 10:30 pm

I just switched to feeding my pig powerfill as a complete feed for the next 13 days until weigh-in on July 1. I am trying to hold her because our max weight is 280 and she is 255. She has also been losing freshness so that’s another reason I’m using powerfill. However, I also need her to get a fat cover. I have been supplementing for a fat cover with heavy weight for about the past month or so but she still needs more of a fat cover. So I’m asking: with powerfill (which is high protein) can I still get a fat cover? She is also heavy muscled so I don’t want her getting more muscly but I want to use powerfill to hold her... Any thoughts?

I'm not sure you need to be holding that hard. You get 1.92 ADG until your show, not count transportation loss.

Ok, thank you for the reply. Her base feed is not providing enough lysine for her because she would only get the 25g if I fed her about 7 lb. of it per day, which is too much feed for her weight and ADG. I’m also trying to make room in her diet for the weight gain from a fat supplement, since I want to increase it. She’s also on 2lb of ultra full and 1lb of depth charge per day. Would you recommend combining powerfill and her feed?

You cannot merely look at protein %. Powerfill is also 12% fat. Powerfill when fed by itself is designed to maintain fat cover NOT put more on. ( 280 - 255) / 13 days = 1.92 lb/day.

To do less than that, and put on fat cover feed:
(Total daily feed; divide into 2 equal meals):
High Octane Powerfill. 2 lb
High Octane Ultra Full. 2 lb
High Octane Depth Charge. 1 lb
High Octane Heavy Weight 16 oz

* Ideally start Heavy Weight at 4 oz per day. Increase by 4 oz about every 3 days until you are feeding 16 oz per day.

Mix everything but the Heavy Weight together first. Then mix the Heavy Weight with enough water to make a milk shake like consistency and add to the dry feed.
