Mixing Feed

KGB, We are re-evaluating our feeding options for next year. Looking to grind and mix our own feed. Looked through the guide using the show feed premix and show feed base. Is there a specific type of fat I should use and can you educate me on the soybean meal while you're at it? I want to blend as closely to what I'm buying from the dealer and get this right for the sake of the pig. Thanks!

Soybean oil will work fine. I’m not sure what you need regarding soybean meal?

Just trying to get a feel for what its purpose is and how it benefits the pigs in growth and where that growth will likely be targeted. Also, are there any legitimate alternatives?

Soybean meal is a quality protein source. It offers substantial essential amino acid content. That is it’s main purpose.

Yes, there are other high quality protein sources; select fish meal, dehydrated eggs, and dried skimmed milk to mention a few. But, these protein sources are typically much higher in cost than soybean meal.
