Sow not eating well BIG litter

Post by abelkrista » Sun Mar 07, 2021 3:50 pm

I have a sow that had 17 piglets, 16 lived. She retained placenta after. She ate well 1st 24 hours but then got sick, vomited for a few hours and quit eating. She has expelled the placenta.
She went off feed at 24 HRS. And her let down has stopped and her milk supply is most likely drying up drying up. I was able to get about 5 pounds in her yesterday but she need 20# a day(pig and sow complete). We feed heavy weight to our lactating sows too. I am going to try to find some starter, but closest store with amu starter at 20% or higher is 1.5 hrs away and right now I am assisting with feeding every 1.5 hrs.
I can get the NM grower finisher. Other than the heavy weight anything else you would add to it KGB? I also fed her some beer with the small bit of starter I had on hand for creep feed.

I’m not sure beer is going to do much for very young piglets. Purina Honor First Wean 319 is available in your area. That’s what I recommend for the piglets. If they are very you g (less than 18 days or so, I suggest mixing milk replacer (make milk and offer the milk first and then after 3-4 days begin to mix on 319 to make a gruel).

The NM Starter Grower doesn’t have the nutrient content or ingredient complexity to be adequate fir very you g pigs. There are many reason does stop eating after farrowing. The bug two are:

1. Constipation (they lose a tremendous amount of water during farrowing and dehydrate. The best things yo go are put a laxative in the sow’s feed (Dynamate at 10 lb per ton, or Sow Lax) a week prior to farrowing, and keep it in until 4-5 days post farrowing. Also, if using a crate lower the nipple so she can access water while laying down.

2. Sub clinical infection. As a general rule it is a good idea to administer antibiotics post farrowing. Many times the only symptom is poor appetites.

Thanks KGB.
I didn't make myself very clear, lack of sleep I think. I tried to give my sow a bit if beer to stim. her appetite (apparently she doesnt like beer). The babies are only 4 days old so we are supplementing with ralco birthright amd will continue so until wean.

I was hoping for advice on the sow to help her appetite and her increase nutrition n eeds while in smaller amounts until she begins eating better. My vet did finally recommend moving from uniprim to LA 300, prior they didn't only wanted the oral. We gave her the IM yesterday and she seems better and is eating more so far. She is drinking and pooping. Still not urinating standing only seems to be able to when lying. I am sure things are very swollen in there even with the dexamethasone post partum

I moved her to a grower feed (as the starter I dont have much of) hoping it would give the extra nutrition she needed in less feed (more lysine more protein). I also put her on heavy weight, which I feed all my lactating sows. Just wondered of any of purinas other supplements might help keep her nutrition where it needed to be for feeding so many. Our local feed store has a lot of the champion drive line in stock from last years season so easily obtained. Once she starts eating well i will move her back to pig and sow complete.
My local vet can get 219 and I have that on order for 2 litters that are 3 weeks old.

Champion Drive will provide concentrated nutrition. Which will help since she's not eating much. Remember that it's not the % of protein, lysine etc... so much. What matters is grams per day. For example I use an estimated requirement for sows for lysine of 5 grams/day for every pig nursed. So, if a sow is nursing 10 pigs, she needs about 50 grams lysine per day.

When they are not eating well, products like Champion Drive can help meet that requirement. Also, remember than EVERY metabolic process has a caloric cost. Energy (calories) is very important for milk production. We do have High Octane supplements that are high in energy (Heavy Weight, Power Fuel, even Powerfill and Golden Ticket). However, for sows soybean oil can really help. You are not concerned with how she looks, she's not going to be shown so simply soybean oil can really help as an energy source.

For the piglets mixing 219 and milk (from milk replacer) is the best way to go.

Thanks KGB.

I already have a full bucket of Heavy weight so I will use that for calories-as I have nothing else to feed it to in the near future.

I think I have a plan:

1# of champion drive daily=9.07 grams
.25-2# of Heavy weight daily (she hasn't really liked eating it so I will give as much as will take and watch her BSI) .68-2.72grams
12# of Pig and sow complete=54.432 grams
Total grams daily=64.182 minimum
which will support 12 pigs daily.

If I can not get her to eat that much I will increase the champion drive to 1.5# for 13.608g
and feed her 10# Pig and sow for a 45.36
for a total of 59.64grams minimum

thank you again for all your help!
