Holding ration

Post by mict71 » Mon May 17, 2021 1:55 pm

I have a Gilt that is currently 160 pounds. I have 80 days until our show with a Max weight of 300. I would like to slow her down for awhile then feed normal at the end. My question is what is the best way to hold her and not loose her shape.

Assuming 300 pounds is her most ideal weight she can gain 1.75 pounds per day. With trailer shrink she does not need to be held very much. I would recommend replacing some of her diet with a filler like rolled oats, beet pulp, gut bomb, or show groats. There are many ways to keep shape ex. Higher protein, Junction, or Game on. Muscle is pretty easy to add at the end, so I would worry about weight for now get muscle latter. Remember there are many other things that can affect weight gain.
Good Luck

1.75 lbs/day is correct for what the pig can AVERAGE gaining and stay at or under 300 lbs in 80 days. From 160 to 300 lbs pigs normally average much more than that.

To slow weight gain and get control i suggest feeding this diet:

(TOTAL DAILY FEED; DIVIDE INTO 2 EQUAL MEALS):
Purina HONOR 719 (or 819) 2 lbs
High Octane Powerfill 2 lbs
High Octane Depth Charge 8 oz (1/2 lbs)

This diet should result in about 1.5 lbs per day, AND keep the pig full appearing and make the pig look great. You can feed this all the way to show if you like. That would put the pig at about 280 lbs.

Hand feed equal amounts twice per day (divide the above by 2 for each feeding). If the pig needs more fat cover, replace 1/2 lbs of Showpig feed with 8 oz of High Octane Heavy Weight. If the pig needs more muscle, replace 1 lbs of Showpig feed with 1 lbs of High Octane Champion Drive.

Most pigs do not gain any more than 1.75 in the modern show industry especially crosses. Depending on her ideal weight, it will effect what you want to feed. Watch her close, but you should be okay. Hold her for a week or 2 if you are worried and then let her go. When you let her go make sure you get her back up on feed slowly. I would not do a diet that would make her gain 1.5 lbs the whole time. You want the pig to be let go for the last week or 2. If you are going to hold shut her down for a couple weeks. Then resume feeding more when you feel comfortable. Hold heavy now if you are going to hold at all, besides there is no magic formula that will cause you gilt to gain 1.5 lbs per day. This is not an exact science every pig is different.
