Melatonin or Pig Calm

Post by BigPiggy » Tue Feb 25, 2014 3:50 pm

I have a tight strung pig that I am taking to a show next week. great pig with a chance to do well. Will be a light weight but heavy muscle and gets tired and starts to stress a little sometimes when we walk him.

I did not know if I should give him melatonin or pig calm. I am going to start it the night before we travel to the show and give it to him the off day and the day of the show also just to make sure hes ok for my daughter to show, but want to try and make the right choice for the animal and for my daughter to have the best chance to show him well enough to place.

Please help and with recommended dosages and when to dose.

thanks !!!!!

I've used the valerian root combined with melatonin with some success. Not sure of the effectiveness of these "snake oils" on our pigs, but I know they help me calm down before I send my kid in the show ring! Seriously, I've given it to the pigs usually a couple hours before showing and feel that it does help knock the edge off of a pigs that are kinda high strung. No special formal or amounts, just a couple of each (or 3 or 4).

A couple of tabs each will do the trick but will work better if you get them on it daily at home.

I am on day 5 now of the valerian root and melatonin. I am giving about 5 capsules sprinkled on top of his feed of the valerian root and the melatonin is a gel cap that don't open so I give him 1 a day (5mg) but tonight I am giving him one more because we leave tomorrow morning at 4 am and want him calm and I will probably just give him one Monday night, One Tuesday, Two Wednesday and then just one on show day (Thursday) and keep the valerian root at 5 day. Not to much so he don't sleep thru his show

It seems to work pretty good. Taking pig calm for back up but melatonin and valerian root seem to work pretty good. He is easy to work with now and now quite so hard headed to. little more relaxed.

I have been trying to find pig calm to buy and try on my son's pig, but I am not able to find it. Any suggestions on where to look?
And is melatonin ok to give to the pigs during the show and before auction?

I might recommend the Composure product from Essential Feeds. It is a paste (comes in a small tube) that is all natural. Calms through three different substances - tryptophan (the stuff in turkey that makes you tired), magnesium, and thiamine. 1 tube will equal three doses for a hog and a tube runs around 10 dollars. Very effective product.

How much melatonin are you giving? We have a tamworth who thinks she is an Olympic sprinter.. currently giving 5htp, 3 valerian root and 60mg of melatonin and it isn’t phasing her other than she doesn’t scream as much. Also- how soon before a show are you dosing?
