Feeding bred gilts ?

Post by topdawg88 » Thu Sep 11, 2014 8:33 pm

What do you folks recommend feeding bred gilts as far as protein level and amount of feed daily with gilts just being bred in the past week or two.

Get them on a "gestation" feed. Usually within the first 30 days, 4 lbs/day is the rule of thumb unless they are way under condition and might need another pound or so. Too much feed in the very beginning can make them metabolize too hot and actually "burn up" so to speak the embryos. After 30 days--4 lbs +/- 1-2 pounds per day based on BCS (Body condition score). Most of ours have done well on just 4 lbs/day through the entire gestation on a gestation feed.
