Please wade in... I adapted this diet from the Purina public sources.
One of this years crop is 42 days out from the WA State Fair. Typical bulging muscle pedigree and its a challenge to get the muscle to stop and the cover to start. Will plan on Paylean in the last 21 if needed to bring out the pop and clean up any waste.
Current Weight is 230, planning on 290 +/- 5 at the fair in 42 days.
(current glide slope has him finishing at 302)
Fair has a ultra sound back fat inspection.
Lifetime avg ppd gain is 1.81, estimating I'll need 1.21 over the next 42 days.
We will start the following plan today, expecting 1.5 +/- ppd.
103//: Build Cover & Continue Muscle development at 1.5 lbs per day.
1. High Octane® Powerfill® 2 lbs (32 oz)
2. HSC Showpig Feed (809, or 909) 1 lbs 809/1lbs 909
3. High Octane® Depth Charge ½ lbs (8 oz)
4. High Octane Heavy Weight ½ lbs (8oz)
5. Rolled Oats 1 lbs
If needed
6. High Octane Depth Charge ½ lbs (8oz)
TOTAL 6 ½ lbs
Thoughts, suggestions?
42 Days and Need Some Cover
Re: 42 Days and Need Some Cover
After a full week we weighed to check progress. The above diet brought us a little closer to 2.5 PPD, and a total gain of 17.3 pounds. Now looking at 248 of 290 pounds with 35 days remaining, 1.2 PPD estimated. Muscled sustainment is good, no measureable loss of form or shape. Cover is starting to form on ribs and depth charge is begining to fill the body.
I need to pull this back without effecting muscling and fat devlopement, thinking about increasing the Heavy Weight by 1/2 pound and decreasing the Power Fill by a 1/2 pound as well. How far is too far with the Heavy weight? i can clean up any waste with pay lean in the final days.
Modified Plan Week 2: Expecting 1.3 PPD with good fat/cover on rib and no loss of muscle
103//:
1. High Octane® Powerfill® 1 ½ lbs
2. HSC Showpig Feed (809) 909 temporarily unavailable in my area.
3. High Octane® Depth Charge ½ lbs (8 oz)
4. High Octane Heavy Weight 1 lbs (8oz)
5. Rolled Oats 3/4 lbs
If needed
6. High Octane Depth Charge ½ lbs (8oz)

Re: 42 Days and Need Some Cover
Ok, let's start over. First, if you add rolled oats (oat groats) the pig is going to gain faster....much faster at 1 lbs per day oats.
Pig is 248 today, and you have 35 days remaining, and you want the pig at 290. Like you stated this equates to a 1.2 ADG (290 - 248 / 35) ... (for those that may not know how to figure that.)
You want to limit weight gain and put on cover. It will be tougher now that before but it can be done.
I suggest feeding:
(TOTAL DAILY FEED; DIVIDE INTO 2 EQUAL FEEIDNGS):
Powerfill 1 3/4 lbs
High Octane Champion Drive 1 lbs
High Octane Heavy Weight 12 oz
High Octane Depth Charge 8 oz
The pig should gain about 1.2 lbs per day and put on fat cover. At this point if the pig is heavily muscled I wouldn't think about feeding Paylean as it will dramatically increase growth rate. If the pig isn't quite gaining 1.2 lbs per day (it should but if it doesn't) increase the Heavy Weight to 1 lbs per day.
If the pig has a tough time staying or looking full, then increase the Depth Charge to 1 lbs per day. If you take the pig to 295 (it should lose 5 lbs on the trip to Puyallop), then it can gain 1.34 lbs per day.

Re: 42 Days and Need Some Cover
Thank you sir, quick clarification , not rolled oats but whole oats. Not sure if that will matter too much but we've always used oats when holding and they do not seem to digest or retain them.
I will certainly give this a try.

Re: 42 Days and Need Some Cover
You don't need the oats. And they will make the pig gain faster. They get some nutrition out of whole oats as well.
