Need some holding advice, Berk gilt

Post by Joe kauffman » Thu Feb 02, 2017 9:52 pm

Hi all,

My daughter bred her champion Berk gilt from last year and kept one of her babies. She's a spitting image of mom but we just found yesterday that she's way ahead of schedule. We have 64 days till fair and she's tipping in at 203 lbs (max at our show is 300). I think she'll be optimal in the 280-290 range. Currently feeding 3.5lbs Sunglo Grower, 1lbs oats, 3/4 lbs pulp per day. Supplementing with Stand Alone 6oz per day. Just bought some depth charge as she needs some more rib. We're trying to figure out how we should hold to get back on track enough to allow some payleen and finish with some sumo before fair. How much can we pull her back and not get in trouble? The Stand Alone will help with missing nutrients from feed, is 2 lbs day feed, add 8oz depth charge and keeping the pulp and oats the same enough? Thanks in advance!

For a deal like that I'd probably use a total daily ration of 3# of Powerfill and 8 oz or more Depth Charge to keep her from raising a stink about being hungry. She will gain 1 pound per day and there is enough protein and amino acid to maintain her muscle shape along with all the vitamins and minerals she'll need.

That will leave you plenty of room to use paylean and sumo at the end.

Great, thanks Hog Doc. Didn't know Powerfill could be a short term feed replacement and still get them the nutrients they need. After a dirty (literally) show this weekend she's come down with something so might lose weight on her own, hopefully at no other expense.

We had to hold one for a while this year too. Held her using the Powerfill and Depth Charge successfully - won our local show. We weighed weekly - same day of the week and same time of the day. If she gained one pound a day or less, after a couple of weeks, I would add a little show feed for a week or so - don't know if it was necessary but I was afraid of her falling apart. The Powefill is supposed to be very complete tho. I think you can feed as must Depth Charge as you want/ need - it's just a filler. We had enough room to add Paylean the last 2 wks.. The Judge said she was the freshest, most market ready hog he has seen in a while.

Alright, so we are 10 days out and she ripped the scale at 301 empty today. Our cutoff is 300 so we're needing to make a big change without ruining her. She's on 2lbs feed and 2lbs cruise control now, should we pull feed all together?

You might try feeding:
(Total daily feed; divide into 2 equal meals):

High Octane Fitter 35. 3 lb
High Octane Depth Chatge. 1/2 lb (8 oz)

She may gain 0.25 lb per day, and improve muscle shape. Do not pull feed altogether.

Thanks KGB. We are calling all our feed shops to see if we can find fitter 35. So assuming that gain, she'll be about 305-6 by then and holding feed & water 24 hours before should get her under 300?

She should lose that during transportation to the Show. And she may not gain that much ch on that diet.

Well, no fitter 35 anywhere around here. Can't even find any powerfill but did find some depth charge.

Whoever is carrying Deoth Charge can also get Fitter 35 and Powerfill. Purina dealers and Tractor Supply stores can get them for you.
